  • Food Dominance in Dogs

Open Access•Jack Werboff, Sherman Ross et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1976

Effects of chlorpromazine and d-amphetamine on food dominance were studied in 18 purebred dogs over a 10-wk. period. Dominance was determined by time spent at a common food dish. Trials were conducted each week with no drugs to determine the dominance relationships, followed by each dominant and submissive member receiving either saline, d-amphetamine, or chlorpromazine. New pairings were created on the following week with a total of 72 pairings …

  • Pain

Matisyohu Weisenberg, Michael L Kreindler et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1975

Reactions of black, white and Puerto Rican patients were studied in an outpatient dental emergency clinic. Measures used included the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, palmar sweat prints, an interview to obtain patient characteristics and attitudes toward pain, Dental Anxiety Scale and a posttreatment dentist rating. No differences between ethnic and racial groups were obtained in amount of pain, number or type of symptoms patients had. Significant…

  • Avoidance Conditioning in the Guppy ( Lebistes Reticulatus )

    Open Access•Jack Werboff, Thomas J Lloyd et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

Acquisition of a conditioned avoidance response has been demonstrated in the guppy. Although no reliable differences were observed between the three CS-US intervals used, the trend of the data showing that fewer trials are required to reach criterion with longer CS-US intervals supports similar observations reported for other species of fish. The use of the guppy for studies of behavioral genetics and behavioral teratology has been considered

  • Postnatal Effects of Control Fluids Administered to Gravid Rats

    Open Access•Joan Havlena, Jack Werboff•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

Studies of the effects of drugs and other compounds on animals typically employ injections of the diluting agent to a control group. Diluting agents commonly used are distilled water, saline, and oil. Routes of administration also vary and include the intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, intravenous, and oral. Since previous work in this laboratory has been concerned with the administration of various pharmacologicall agents to pregnant rats and the ef…

  • Adrenalectomy of the Pregnant Rat and Behavior of the Offspring

    Open Access•Joan Havlena, Jack Werboff•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

Albino rats were adrenalectomized on either Day 101⁄2 or Day 161⁄2 of gestation. The offspring were reared by foster mothers. At 25, 30, 35, 40, or 45 days of age they were evaluated on the open field and timidity box tests. There were no behavioral or adrenal size differences among the offspring of adrenalectomized and sham-operated or unoperated control mothers. Consistent and significant sex differences on all measures were found, with females…

  • Effects of Aging on Open Field Behavior

    Open Access•Jack Werboff, Joan Havlena•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

In a recent report by Furchtgott, et al. ( 1961 ), exploratory behavior in an open field situation was found to decrease with increasing age. These investigators used naive animals at each age of testing and terminated their study at 390 days of age. The present investigation confirms some of the findings of the above mentioned report, utilizing a different experimental design with repeated testing of the same animals to demonstrate chat the age …

  • Audiogenic Seizures and Sensitivity to Peripheral Shock

    Open Access•Jack Werboff, John B Corcoran•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1962

Few studies deal with audiogenic seizures as an independent variable and their resulting effects on bodily processes or behavior. The available reports indicate that audiogenic seizures result in increased emotionality (Bevan, 1955) and decrements in retention of both maze performance (Shaw, Utechr, & Fullanger, 1953; Srainbrook, 1948), and brightness discrimination (Shohl, 1951). These reports concluded that poor rerenrion of learned material fo…

  • Effect of ECS and Ether-ECS on Behavior in the Timidity Box

    Open Access•John A Stern, David G Mcdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1956

Three groups of animals, a 15 ECS group (N of 9), a 15 ether-ECS group ( N of 11), and a control group ( N of 9) were exposed to a series of “timidity box” tests 27, 75, 110, and 163 days after last ECS. The “timidity box” was found to provide a sensitive measure of relatively long lasting emotional changes as a function of the series of 15 ECS. The ECS group proved to be more “timid” than the control group. The ether-ECS animals in this experime…
