The Grammar of Civil War
This book grows out of Fowler’s previous studies of the forceful negotiations that dominated the early political life of nineteenth-century Mexico. Known as pronunciamientos, these tense affairs usually ended without cataclysmic violence and led to concessions and agreement between the contending factions. In short, Fowler has already demonstrated how democracy by other means functioned in Mexico. Such was not the case with the War of Reform from…
The Last Emperor of Mexico
Michele McArdle Stephens. In the Lands of Fire and Sun
In the Lands of Fire and Sun: Resistance and Accommodation in the Huichol Sierra, 1723–1930 is a sometimes impressionistic tour through the colonial and modern history of Huichol Mexico, located in the unforgiving highlands that dominate the present-day borderlands of Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Zacatecas. Paradoxically, there is both a lot and frustratingly little history in this concise volume. Michele McArdle Stephens establishes early on t…
Independent Mexico
As the concluding volume of a four-part study of pronunciamientos (forceful negotiations), Independent Mexico is a fitting capstone to nearly two decades of prolific research and publication on the topic. Will Fowler expertly mines the existing literature and a massive database at the University of St. Andrews—a significant portion of which he has shaped—to create a work that is both conceptually ambitious and cohesive. He navigates several histo…
Pablo Mijangos y González. The Lawyer of the Church
Pablo Mijangos y González has created an erudite intellectual and political history of the Catholic Church in nineteenth-century Mexico. The author’s efficient prose, built on the foundation of a judicious exploration of archives in Europe and Mexico, provides a compelling reinterpretation of the basis of Catholic opposition to liberal reforms. Although structured around political circumstances within Mexico from the 1830s through the 1860s (all …
