  • A detailed investigation of anxiety disorders in children of clinically anxious parents

Open Access•Sigrid Elfström, Susanne Wicks et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2026

BACKGROUND: We assessed the risk of anxiety disorders in children of clinically anxious parents, focusing on the influence of parent and child sex, parental care level, depressive comorbidity, and anxiety subtype, while controlling for socioeconomic factors and other parental psychiatric conditions. METHODS: We conducted a population-based study utilizing comprehensive healthcare data. A cohort of children (N = 516,134), born in 1998-2015 and res…

  • Prevention of Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder in At-Risk Children

Open Access•Kristina Aspvall, Martin Kraepelien et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2026

Preventing obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) before it emerges has long been considered a central, yet elusive, goal for researchers. Achieving this will likely require identifying individuals at elevated risk and intervening during critical developmental periods before the onset of impairing symptoms. This trial evaluated the feasibility of a brief parent-guided online targeted prevention program for children at-risk of developing OCD. We enro…

  • Evaluating a program to prevent anxiety in children of anxious parents

Open Access•Sigrid Elfström, Anna Rosengren et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2025

BACKGROUND: Pediatric anxiety disorders are prevalent, particularly among children with anxious parents. This trial evaluated a program for anxious parents aimed at preventing offspring anxiety disorders and symptoms over 12 months. METHODS: This parallel, randomized, controlled, open-label trial was conducted at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden. Inclusion criteria comprised heightened parental anxiety and the child (5-9 years old) not cu…

  • Climate worry

Open Access•Fabian Lenhard, Lorena Fernández De La Cruz et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

Using an established measure of functional impairment, we found an association of climate worry with functional impairment and PEBs. Importantly, as there is a perceived need for support in individuals with impairment due to climate worry, interventions targeting this specific subgroup should be developed

  • Psychometric evaluation of the Swedish version of ages and stages questionnaire social-emotional

Open Access•Anna Edenius, Malin Bergström et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Psychology•2024

The results of this study highlight that the original Swedish version of the ASQ:SE-2 for 18-month-old children may not be an adequate tool for assessing social and emotional competencies in a normal population since acceptable reliability was reached only in children with the greatest difficulties (above the 78th percentile). In conclusion, the suggested 18-item version works best either as a screening instrument for problems with social interac…

  • Prospective associations between psychosomatic complaints in adolescence and depression and anxiety symptoms in young adulthood

Open Access•Karina Grigorian, Viveca Ostberg et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2023

Psychosomatic complaints in adolescence were associated with depression and anxiety symptoms in young adulthood. This was true for the frequency, number, and persistence of psychosomatic complaints. Among girls, those who reported persistent psychosomatic complaints from middle to late adolescence had the highest likelihood of reporting subsequent depression and anxiety symptoms. Taken together, the results indicate that psychosomatic complaints …

  • Parent Management Training Combined with Group-CBT Compared to Parent Management Training Only for Oppositional Defiant Disorder Symptoms

Open Access•Maria Helander, Pia Enebrink et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2022

Parent management training (PMT) is recommended treatment for children with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and child-directed cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is also recommended for school-aged children. The current study examined 2-year follow-up effects of parent management training (PMT) combined with the CBT based group intervention Coping Power Program (CPP) compared to PMT only. Results showed long-term effectiveness of both PMT and P…

  • The Cost of Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder in Swedish Youth

Open Access•Fabian Lenhard, Kristina Aspvall et al.•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•2021

The economic impact of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) on society is unknown. We compared a wide range of individual-level cost data of children 7-17 years with OCD (n = 152) with a control group from the general population in Sweden (n = 768). The total annual cost in the OCD group was M = 11941€ (95%CI [9915-13966]), compared to the control group M = 6380 € (95%CI [5461-7299]), corresponding to an estimated marginal mean cost of O…
