  • Validation and Psychometric Properties of the German Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue) for Preschool Children

Open Access•Dorota Buczyłowska, Katja Dittrich et al.•ARTICLE•Early Education and Development•2026

Research Findings: The Empathy Questionnaire (EmQue) is a parent-report questionnaire developed in the Netherlands to assess the first three components of children’s empathy, that is, emotion contagion (EC), attention to others’ feelings (AOF), and prosocial actions (PA). We examined the validity of the German version of EmQue for children aged 3–6 (N = 114). Using confirmatory factor analysis, we approved the three-factor structure found in prev…

  • Interactive behavior in mothers with and without borderline personality disorder

Open Access•Kristina Meyers, Kristina Meyer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

The results indicate reduced child affect recognition in mothers with BPD. Further, mothers showing stronger neural activation of the TPJ and dmPFC while seeing their own sad children were more non-hostile, pointing towards an important role of affective ToM in maternal care, which might be a viable therapeutic target in future studies

  • The mediating role of attachment and anger

Open Access•Karolina Wuebken, Felix Bermpohl et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Attachment insecurity and anger suppression may serve as pathways linking the maternal history of ELM to the risk of child abuse, even when considering maternal psychopathology. Overall, our findings indicate that interventions aimed at strengthening attachment and improving anger suppression may be beneficial for all mothers with ELM history and high child abuse potential, not just those who suffer from mental illness

  • Don't Make Me Angry

Open Access•Katja Bertsch, Sarah N Back et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Aggression is a prominent interpersonal dysfunction of individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). In BPD aggression is predominantly reactive in nature, often triggered by frustration, provocation, or social threat and is associated with intense anger and an inability to regulate this strong, negative emotion. Building on previous research, we were interested in investigating negative emotionality in general and anger in particular i…

  • Impact of a Mechanism-Based Anti-Aggression Psychotherapy on Behavioral Mechanisms of Aggression in Patients With Borderline Personality Disorder

Open Access•Hannah Honecker, Katja Bertsch et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: Aggressive behavior is highly prevalent in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and represents a major burden for patients and their environment. Previous studies have hypothesized threat hypersensitivity, among other mechanisms, as a biobehavioral mechanism underlying aggressive behavior in patients with BPD. The effects of a 6-week mechanism-based anti-aggression psychotherapy (MAAP) for the group setting were teste…
