  • When scarcity intensifies conflict

Open Access•Stephan Geschwind, Johann Graf Lambsdorff et al.•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2026

Conflict over increasingly scarce resources such as freshwater, energy, arable land or wildlife has been identified as a major security threat in a world facing climate change. The literature suggests that asymmetric appropriation of resources facilitates such scarcity-related conflicts. We test this in a novel experimental design based on a dynamic common-pool resource game. In a 2x2 treatment design, we vary Asymmetry/Symmetry and Scarcity/Abun…

  • Does scarcity induce hostility? An experimental investigation of common-pool resources

    Open Access•Stephan Geschwind, Johann Graf Lambsdorff•ARTICLE•Ecological Economics•2025

Climate change is leading to an increased scarcity of resources such as freshwater, energy, arable land and wildlife. This is perceived as a major security threat. However, the literature remains unclear on whether scarcity mitigates or exacerbates conflict. We design a novel laboratory experiment to investigate hostile behavior under scarcity. Participants interact repeatedly in a dynamic common-pool resource (CPR) and a joy-of-destruction game.…

  • Emotional Numbing and Lessons Learned after a Violent Conflict – Experimental Evidence from Ambon, Indonesia

Katharina Werner, Johann Graf Lambsdorff•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

The consequences of violent conflict remain puzzling, with some studies suggesting discrimination, others discovering increased prosociality, and others finding evidence for reduced prosociality. We solve this puzzle with results from dictator, ultimatum, and trust games run with Muslim and Christian students in post-conflict Ambon, Indonesia. We find that discrimination is only moderate and that the reaction of prosociality is context-specific. …

  • How Fragile Is Conditional Cooperation? A Field Experiment with Smartphones during the 2014 Soccer World Cup

Open Access•Johann Graf Lambsdorff, Marcus Giamattei et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

We conducted an experiment in a highly cooperative environment to find out how a disruption, similar to a broken window, affects behavior. A centipede game was framed as a game of soccer and run with smartphones during a soccer public viewing event, that is, a Bavarian beer garden with a large screen displaying a soccer game. We provided some subjects with information that was supportive to cooperation and others with disruptive information, aime…

  • Negative Reciprocity in an Environment of Violent Conflict

    Open Access•Manuel Schubert, Johann Graf Lambsdorff•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Resolution•2014•Cited by: 4•References: 64

How is negative reciprocity cultivated in an environment of violent conflict? This study investigates how students in the West Bank react to unfair proposals in an ultimatum game. Proposals submitted with Hebrew as compared to Arab handwriting are rejected more often. Israelis must offer 15 percent more of a given stake than Palestinians in order to achieve the same probability of acceptance. This willingness to lose money by rejecting proposals …

  • The Institutional Economics of Corruption and Reform

    Open Access•Johann Graf Lambsdorff•BOOK•Institutional Economics of…•2007

Corruption has been a feature of public institutions for centuries yet only relatively recently has it been made the subject of sustained scientific analysis. Lambsdorff shows how insights from institutional economics can be used to develop a better understanding of why corruption occurs and the best policies to combat it. He argues that rather than being deterred by penalties, corrupt actors are more influenced by other factors such as the oppor…

  • An Empirical Approach

Open Access•Johann Graf Lambsdorff•ARTICLE•American Journal of Economics and…•2002•Cited by: 5

There is empirical evidence that investors' confidence is not only adversely affected by corruption but also by the lack of predictability and confidence that accompanies corrupt deals. However, the positive aspect of this lack of confidence is that it acts as a deterrent to corruption. Empirical data provided here on a cross-section of countries proves that confidence in corrupt deals enhances the further spread of corruption. This suggests that…

  • De la propension des exportateurs à verser des pots-de-vin. L'impact sur les échanges

    Johann Graf Lambsdorff, Nicolas Froeliger•ARTICLE•Tiers-Monde•2000
