Preinitials and their development in Horpa and Tangut
The present article reconstructs the set of preinitial consonants present in Proto-Horpa, the source of contemporary Horpa lects spoken in Sichuan, China. Horpa is a West Gyalrongic subgroup of lects known for its conservative phonology, which is among other things reflected in complex syllable initial consonant clusters. The study establishes nine proto-preinitials (*n-, *m-, *v-, *s-, *z-, *ɣ-, *ʁ-, *l-, *r-) and demonstrates that they have bee…
Egophoricity in Central Stau copular clauses
This article demonstrates that the Central Stau language (Horpa < Gyalrongic < Sino-Tibetan/Trans-Himalayan) possesses a binary egophoricity contrast in its copular system in affirmative clauses not described and analysed in detail before. It examines the functions of the egophoric copula ŋu and its non-egophoric counterpart ŋə. Of these, the former signals the relevant speech act participant's personal involvement, epistemic authority or a portr…
A pan-dialectal survey of the Horpa preinitial systems
This paper presents a pan-dialectal synchronic survey and documentation of preinitials in the Horpa cluster (West Gyalrongic). Based on fieldwork and analysis of earlier Horpa scholarship, the study not only describes the preinitial systems of ten Horpa varieties covering all proposed branches of the Horpa cluster of West Gyalrongic, but it also identifies four key parameters of variation in the preinitial systems, namely the presence or absence …
Verbal numeral classifiers in languages of Eastern Eurasia
This article presents a typological survey of verbal numeral classifiers (VNCs) in languages of Eastern Eurasia. As classifiers of occurrence (e.g., to V once, to V twice), VNCs are prevalent in languages of East Asia and Southeast Asia, yet the phenomenon has been largely overlooked in typological studies that have overwhelmingly focused on the adnominal use of numeral classifiers. Analyzing a sample of 543 linguistic varieties, the study catego…
Kazakhstani Gansu Dungan as a Contact Language
This paper discusses extensive language contact and its results in Kazakhstani Gansu Dungan, a divergent variety of Mandarin Chinese. Based primarily on recorded conversational source materials, this study offers a contact linguistic overview of the language, introducing both phonological and morphosyntactic contact phenomena. It is shown that Kazakhstani Gansu Dungan is currently under extensive Russian influence. The influence permeates all lay…

From transitive to intransitive and voiceless to voiced in Proto-Sino-Tibetan
This paper offers new evidence from Stau, Geshiza, and Khroskyabs to address the question of directionality in valency-changing derivations in Sino-Tibetan. Examining Stau, Geshiza, and Khroskyabs causative and anticausative verb stem pairs adds to the evidence that in Proto-Sino-Tibetan, a number of intransitive stems are derived from transitive stems, in some cases as the result of * N ‐ prefixation, and in other cases from voicing alternation …
Verb classes in Horpa
Based on argument indexation properties, this paper offers a model of four verb classes for Geshiza and Stau, two closely related and endangered Horpa lects spoken in Sichuan. Despite increased awareness and interest in Horpa, no exhaustive classification of verbs from the viewpoint of argument indexation has been offered. Even though argument indexation itself has been discussed in previous scholarship, the striking diversity of argument indexat…
