Effects of early health-insurance programs on European mortality and fertility trends
The Contributions of Early Health-Insurance Programs to Mortality Declines in Pre-World War I Europe
The Role of Economic Growth in the Fertility Transition in Western Europe
A "revisionist" view of the European fertility transition has challenged the previously accepted causal roles of economic forces. The authors' contribution has been to construct and test an econometric model in which economic growth causes fertility change. They find that rising per capita incomes raised birth rates up to estimated turning points and thereafter exerted negative effects. This finding is partly consistent with the revisionist view:…
Undocumented Immigration and Unemployment of U.S. Youth and Minority Workers
The authors use Census-based data on the state distribution of the undocumented-alien population in analyzing the relationship between that population and unemployment among youth and minority workers. Regression results from their two-equation models do not support commonly expressed fears that undocumented immigration has caused any substantial increases in joblessness among these presumably vulnerable groups, although small amounts of displace…
Women's Labour Force Participation and the Distribution of Household Incomes
This study investigates the effects of women's labor force participation on household income inequ ality. The theoretical background is examined, an econometric model i s specified and tested, and a simulation is performed. The results sh ow that the direction and strength of the income-distribution effects vary with the level of women's participation. Starting from low leve ls, a rise in women's activity rates intensifies income inequality, b ut…
Women's Fertility, Market Work and Marital Status
Since its emergence from the pioneering efforts of Becker (1960) and Mincer (1962), the new household economics has inspired a wide range of theoretical and empirical models of demographic behaviour, with particular emphasis on fertility, female labour force participation and marriage. A central principle of these models has been to assign critical roles to the values of men's and women's time in the decision-making process. In the present paper,…
