Handheld methods in archaeological research on large copper alloy assemblages
When alloy composition information is sought across a single large artefact assemblage, how well do handheld methods solve the problem of museum environments which restrict the movement of artefacts and destructive sampling, and which have limited in‐house technical resources? The usefulness of relatively low‐cost handheld analytical instruments still needs evaluating in such arenas. The potential advantages which handheld laser‐induced breakdown…
Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age metallurgical practices at Limenaria, Thasos
An Archaic metallurgical workshop in Thasos (Greece)
An important archaeometallurgical context dating to the Archaic period (700-480 BC) has been excavated at Thasos (Greece). In particular a pear-shaped metallurgical furnace was revealed while its fill and surrounding area was characterized by the abundant presence of slag, fragments of crucibles and furnace lining. Based on macroscopic examination and instrumental analysis it was shown that the slags and other waste products correspond to the mel…
An integrated approach to the characterization and dating of furnaces in smelting sites in Macedonia, Greece
Polykmetos Sideros
Pre‐Industrial Iron Smelting and Silver Extraction in North‐Eastern Greece
In contrast to Western Europe's well‐documented contribution to global industrialization, Eastern Europe has not received adequate attention. This paper addresses this asymmetry by defining a secure socio‐technical framework for the development of metallurgical technology in one of the most important mineralized zones in Eastern Europe, namely the uplands of north‐eastern Greece. The interplay of technological innovation, geography and social pro…
