  • Legal Origins of the European Border Regime

    Open Access•Albert Manke•ARTICLE•Society•2025•References: 28

The current European border regime is characterized by racialized exclusion. I argue that this is the result of a process of internalization of norms whose legal origins can be traced back to the US exclusion era best known for the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. • From Secrecy to the Public Sphere

    Open Access•Albert Manke, Fredy González•ARTICLE•History and Theory•2025•References: 1

This essay reflects on how changing practices and knowledge repertoires of Chinese migrant associations in the Americas shaped translocal collective spheres in the asymmetric setting known as the Exclusion Era. In order to achieve this, we highlight certain aspects and layers of what Homi K. Bhabha has called "cultural translation," which, in our case, was advanced through the agency, ideas, and practices of individuals who organized in Chinese s…

  • The impact of the 1949 Chinese Revolution on a Latin American Chinese community

    Open Access•Albert Manke•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Política…•2018•References: 4

This article argues that, while initially constrained by U.S. Cold War policies both in the Americas and in Asia, China’s 1949 Communist Revolution could finally have a transformative impact on Latin American Chinese overseas community after the Cuban Revolution opened up new avenues for socialist influence in Latin America. By using new archival sources and interviews, we will analyze this changing impact by highlighting the intertwined layers o…

This bibliographical and conceptual essay summarizes recent research in Cold War Studies in Europe and the Americas, especially on smaller states in historiographical studies. Against the background of an increasing connectedness and globalization of research about the Cold War, the authors highlight the importance of the full-scale integration of countries and regions of the 'Global South' into Cold War Studies. Critical readings of the newly av…
