Jean-François Lehuby's Nouvelle-Neustrie; or, The Politics of Colonial Investment During the Second Restoration
This article reconstructs the life of Jean-François Lehuby (1779–1832) and of his colonial venture, the Compagnie de la Nouvelle-Neustrie (1821–1832), which attempted to establish settlements first in North America and later in Central American Moskitia. By examining overlooked departmental archives, this study builds on new scholarship on France's imperial reconfigurations during the Second Restoration. It illustrates how Lehuby, a merchant and …
The king’s word: Colonial contracting and financial capitalism in Moskitia during the scramble for Central America, 1824–42
This article examines how Miskitu King Robert Charles Frederic (1824–42) used colonial contracts with foreign merchants to advance his political agenda in Moskitia, on Central America’s Caribbean coast. Drawing on European and Central American archives, this study challenges narratives that portray Indigenous leaders as passive actors in colonial expansion, highlighting how the king strategically wielded contracts to facilitate the import of fore…
Colonial Exiles: The Tambora Volcanic Explosion, Environmental History, and Swiss Immigration to Nova Friburgo, Brazil, 1815-1821
The 1815 eruption of the Indonesian volcano Mount Tambora triggered a subsistence crisis in Europe, especially in Switzerland. This article retraces the founding of Nova Friburgo, a colony in the mountains near Rio de Janeiro composed of several hundred Swiss families, mostly from the rural canton of Fribourg. This study shows how the unusual central European settler migration to the Brazilian tropics was facilitated by a new class of entrepreneu…
The Rise and Fall of George Frederic Augustus II: The Central American, Caribbean, and Atlantic Life of a Miskitu King, 1805–1824
Retracing closely the events of the life of George Frederic, king of the Miskitu (in present-day Honduras and Nicaragua) between 1816 and 1824, this article describes how this Miskitu actor sought to set up, by hiring British agents, the concrete realization of a Central American commercial and political independence project—understood here as a utopia. Although his project ended in failure, the actions of this little-known Miskitu king had reper…
What’s in a Fraud? The Many Worlds of Gregor MacGregor, 1817–1824
This article revisits the story of one the greatest financial frauds in history: Poyais. In the 1820s, Gregor MacGregor issued bonds for this alleged fictitious Central American state on the London capital market. Putting together scattered evidence reveals a complex, multifaceted experiment undertaken by a private adventurer hoping to politically and economically position himself in a changing world. Poyais was a failed project to establish a se…
