Furnaces: Visions of the American Dream and Nightmare in Braddock
Two works of fiction, one a novel, the other a movie, provide a harrowing journey from the American Dream to the American nightmare. Appearing about 70 years apart, Out of this Furnace (by Thomas Bell) and Out of the Furnace (directed by Scott Cooper) closely examine the lives of steelworking families in Braddock, Pennsylvania. The novel shows the hopes and aspirations of Slovak immigrants slowly improving their material lot over three generation…
Youth and Sexuality in the Twentieth-Century United States
When did the sexual revolution happen? Most Americans would probably say the 1960s. In reality, young couples were changing the rules of public and private life for decades before. By the early years of the twentieth century, teenagers were increasingly free of adult supervision, and taking control of their sexuality in many ways. American psychology by the 1920s contained a greater capacity for viewing some homosexual experiences as normal than most current historical literature suggests. Developmental psychologists agreed with psychiatrists that adult homosexuality was pathological, but they also agreed that adolescent sexual development included a homosexual phase. Until the late 1960s, developmental texts reassured parents and teachers that homosexual behavior among ad…

New and Improved: The Transformation of American Women's Emotional Culture
This is a well-written and interesting book whose many virtues are only partially obscured by a confusing interpretive framework. John C. Spurlock and Cynthia A. Magistro are concerned with the relationship between “emotionology and emotional experience” for well-educated young women of the early twentieth century. This reviewer finds “emotionology” a clunky, imprecise term that the historical profession, let alone the general reader, could well …
