  • Entering Into a Sonic Intra-Active Quantum Relation with Plant Life

    Open Access•John E Keller, Juliana España Keller•ARTICLE•Open Cultural Studies•2024

In the speculative research of plant bioacoustics, one enters into a sonic intra-active relation, by humans with non-human beings (plant life), activated through acoustic wave signals emitted by plants to create electronic patterns of sounds composed by humans and emitted by machines. Plants emit sound waves at relatively low frequencies of 50–120 Hz. Experimenting with patching and modulation by tracking these sonic lines of data can indeed lead…

  • Greta//a Plastic Poem: An Integrated Approach to the Vibrant Matter of Voice, Deep Listening, and Somatic Movement in Sonic Performance Art as Plastic Activism

Open Access•John E Keller, Juliana España Keller•ARTICLE•AM Journal of Art and Media Studies•2021

Through an analysis of the sonic performance artwork GRETA//A PLASTIC POEM (2020), this paper analyzes why and when participatory art practices can intra-sect and converge with ecologies to imagine posthuman futures and challenge pre-existing structures of thought. From an activist position that considers art and the environment as a participatory collective model, this article argues for a reappraisal of human influence in complex human–non-huma…

A Public Kitchen is formed by recreating the private and domestic space of a kitchen into a public space through a sonic performance artwork. The kitchen table is a platform for exploring, repositioning and amplifying kitchen tools as material phenomena through electronic and manual manipulation into an immersi…

  • Daily Life Depicted in the "Cantigas de Santa Maria"

Charles B Moore, John E Keller et al.•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Review•1999

The hundreds of illuminated miniatures found in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, centered around the miracles of the Virgin Mary and sponsored by King Alfonso X (1252-84), reveal many vistas of daily life in thirteenth-century Spain. No other source provides such an encyclopedic view of all classes of medieval European society, from kings and popes to the lowest peasants. Men and women are seen farming, hunting, engaging in war, going on pilgrimage, …

IN our studies of iconography and narrative art, supported by a generous grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, we have photographed and researched various art genres which tell stories. We believe that the importance of this sphere of study is increasingly being recognized and that it can contribute enormously to our knowledge of medieval man's perception of literature and the fine arts. Most interesting parallels and contrasts be…

In each of them is developed some important facet of the intellectual milieu of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, reflecting Otis Green’s life-long and wide-ranging quest for evidence that would broaden our understanding of those complex periods and correct the misapprehensions whi…
