Migratiecollecties, seriële connecties en dynamische bronnenkritiek
Migration collections, serial connections and dynamic source criticismIn this article, we focus on broadening historical migration research in the Netherlands by adding the emigration perspective. We do this on the basis of an analysis of our projects EMIGRATION 1945-1967 and MIGRANT, and the collaboration we have had with Marlou Schrover at various times. Over the course of our approximately 25-year collaboration, the digital and computational a…
Fifty Years of Technocracy. International Migration Management as an Evolving Discourse Coalition
Article Fifty Years of Technocracy. International Migration Management as an Evolving Discourse Coalition was published on December 1, 2022 in the journal Journal of Digital History (volume 2, issue 1)
Migrant visibility
Digitization and digital methods have had a big impact on migration history and history in general. The dispersed and fragmented nature of migration heritage that involves at least two countries and many cultural heritage institutions make it clear that migration history can be much improved by using digital means to connect collections. This makes it possible to overcome the biases that policy have introduced in private and public collections al…
Data scopes for digital history research
The term Macroscope has recently been introduced as an instrument to study historical big data using digital tools. In this paper we argue the need for a more elaborate set of concepts to describe and reason about the interactions to select, enrich, connect, analyse and evaluate historical data using digital tools. Interactions change the data and are essential in understanding any subsequent analysis. It makes them part of historical research me…
Identity, Ritual, and Power in Colonial Puebla
Puebla was the second city of colonial Mexico, after the capital itself. In her book, Frances Ramos studies its political constellation as shaped by the public ceremonies of the city’s cabildo, or ruling council. In eight chapters, not including the introduction and conclusion, she describes the different aspects of the cabildo’s eighteenth-century poblano official public appearances, displays of power, and rituals. She bases her book on city acc…
A Colonial Cacicazgo
The cacicazgo, or indigenous lordship, was a pivotal institution in colonial Mexican Indian pueblos. Caciques, or Indian nobles, played a role, both in the largely indigenous world of the pueblo and in the regional economy that was dominated by Spaniards. This subject of this essay is the analysis of the evolution and daily operation and of a cacicazgo from the Indian settlement of Tepexí de la Seda near the city of Puebla de los Ángeles and the …
Two Worlds Merging
This study originates in the surprise about the scarcity of modem historiography of late sixteenth and early seventeenth-century Mexican history. As with many historians and social scientists my interest sprang from the question how a society evolves, which for me is to say, how the several 'sectors' of society interrelate. In the case of early Mexican history the question was how two different cultures influenced each other.Naturally, questions of…
