The racialization of Muslim family life
Being an insider and outsider: Whiteness as a Key Dimension of Difference
This article demonstrates the significance of engaging with whiteness as a key dimension of difference shaping research in multi-faceted ways. I critically reflect on a research project that included interviews with Muslim men in Rotherham, a northern English town that had experienced a child sexual exploitation crisis involving Pakistani Muslim men. It raised significant methodological and epistemological issues regarding my position in the rese…
Muslim Men, Racialised Masculinities and Personal Life
This article contributes to the study of Muslim men and masculinities by drawing attention to the usefulness of exploring the under-researched relational, emotional and intimate dimensions of Muslim men's lives. It argues that exploring personal life facilitates critical examination of Muslim men's affective ties by casting light on their emotional and intimate lives, beyond a narrow focus on negative emotionality. It highlights the private spher…
Challenging the racialization of child sexual exploitation: Muslim men, racism and belonging in Rotherham
This paper presents findings from original research exploring the impact on Muslim men of a child sexual exploitation scandal that attracted significant attention to the northern English town where they live and contributed to a sustained detrimental effect on local community relations. It foregrounds men's accounts to reveal their agency and resilience in responding to racism that they identified as resulting from the scandal. It reveals how the…

Young People as Moral Beings: Childhood, Morality and Inter‐Generational Relationships
This article uses the work of G offman to explore how a group of older children presented a moral self in a study of inter‐generational relationships. By reflecting critically on their own behaviour and that of other young people and adults, they presented themselves as morally competent agents, whilst questioning the taken‐for‐granted moral competence of adults. Their presentation of a moral self involved portraying themselves as moral beings, w…
Muslims, Racism and Violence after the Paris Attacks
The aim of this short article is to consider ways in which violence, and the threat of it, is integral to the lived experience of Muslims. The article reflects on how violence is intrinsic to forms of racism and explores how it features in the study of racism as it relates to Muslims. In doing so, it briefly examines similarities between forms of racialisation experienced by Muslims and Jews and draws attention to how, in the wake of the Paris at…
Researching white mothers of mixed-parentage children: The Significance of Investigating Whiteness
This article takes as its starting point the increasing number of research studies that pay specific attention to family relationships when investigating mixedness. It draws on the critical study of whiteness to illustrate the significance of examining, in more detail than is usual, white mothers' racialized identity in studies of mixed-parentage families. It is argued that by doing so, understanding of the identity development and sense of belon…

Smoking cessation treatment in primary care: Prospective cohort study
The low proportion of smokers being prescribed these products strongly suggests that a major public health opportunity to prevent smoking related illness is being missed
Is smoking a communicable disease? Effect of exposure to ever smokers in school tutor groups on the risk of incident smoking in the first year of secondary school
The risk of incident smoking in children entering secondary education is independently increased by exposure to other ever smokers in school tutor groups. Incident smoking in adolescents is thus to some extent a communicable disorder, and may be partly preventable by policies that reduce exposure to smoking at school
