  • Is China market socialist? Comparing Western theory to Eastern practice

    James A Yunker•ARTICLE•China Economic Journal•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The question of whether the contemporary Chinese economy is more accurately characterized as market socialist or market capitalist depends to some extent on semantic issues pertaining to the meaning of terms such as capitalism, socialism, and the market. Adding to these complications is the fact that there are several market socialist plans, quite different in their specifics, extant in the systems literature produced by Western economists. The p…

  • Capital Wealth Taxation: Theory and Application

    James A Yunker, James Yunker•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2014•References: 2

Using an ls model analysis, the economic effects of implementing a modest taxation rate on capital wealth (3%) are found to be basically favorable: slightly higher output, lower inequality as measured by various Gini coefficients, and higher social welfare according to the three major social welfare functions—Bentham, Nash and Rawls. Implementing capital wealth taxation enables a compensating reduction in the labor-income taxation rate. The singl…

  • Looking Ahead: The Long View

    Open Access•James A Yunker•CHAPTER•Grand Convergence•2010

As the third millennium of human history gets under way, the position of global human civilization is at once quite promising—but also highly precarious. On one side of the path we are now on lie the “broad, sunlit uplands” of Churchillian rhetoric; 1 on the other side lies a terrifying abyss of death and destruction. In a thousand years’ time, as the fourth millennium begins, what will be the condition of global human civilization? Will the grea…

  • A Comprehensive Incentives Analysis of the Potential Performance of Market Socialism

    James A Yunker•ARTICLE•Review of Political Economy•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This article evaluates the performance of contemporary capitalism relative to that of a hypothetical alternative designated ‘profit-oriented market socialism.’ In most respects, profit-oriented market socialism would closely mimic contemporary market capitalism. The major difference would be that most profits and interest generated by the operations of publicly-owned business enterprises would be distributed to the general public as a social divi…

In this paper, we develop a comprehensive analytical perspective on the contemporary conflict situation between the United States and the Soviet Union, based upon standard concepts and methodologies in contemporary economic thinking. The perspective involves static-model specification, comparative-statics analysis, and a possible extension of the model to dynamic uncertainty circumstances. Applications of the model include results on the determin…

  • On the morality of capitalism: In light of the market socialist alternative

    James A Yunker, James Yunker•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•1988•References: 7

The highly unequal distribution of property return under contemporary capitalism is morally legitimate if property incomes are earned in some meaningful economic sense. But no such sense would exist if some appropriate plan of market socialism could achieve at least as high a level of economic efficiency as contemporary capitalism, while significantly equalizing the distribution of property return. This article discusses various plans of market s…

  • Would Democracy Survive under Market Socialism

    James A Yunker•ARTICLE•Polity•1986•Cited by: 6

Many opponents of socialism believe that it is likely to endanger political democracy. Professor Yunker argues here that this need not happen under pragmatic market socialism. He proposes institutional arrangements to discourage the government of the day from using public ownership of business and industrial establishments for the purpose of defeating or suppressing its political adversaries. He expects that, given the democratic political cultur…

A moral dilemma was described in five written versions: a control version plus four experimental ones. Each experimental version presented a small amount of additional information emphasizing a particular objective consideration bearing on the evaluation of the morally questionable act…

  • Testing the Deterrent Effect of Capital Punishment: A Reduced Form Approach

    Open Access•James A Yunker•ARTICLE•Criminology•1982•Cited by: 1•References: 10

There are three principal alternative explanations for the dramatic rise in crime over the last 15 years: (I) the retirement of capital punishment; (2) socioeconomic trends; (3) random social shocks starring with the Kennedy assassination in 1963. This article reports a statistical test of the second of these explanations. On balance, the results are unfavorable to it. The statistical test involves the extrapolation of a predicted homicide rate o…

Considerable interest is currently emerging in an economic system that would combine the basic socialist principle of public ownership of the non‐human factors of production with the basic free market principle of relatively limited control over the economy by the central government. Such a system has come to be known as “market socialism”. This paper provides a survey over the four primary variants of market socialism that may be distinguished i…
