  • Late Pleistocene Human Skull from Hofmeyr, South Africa, and Modern Human Origins

    Open Access•Frederick E Grine, Richard M Bailey et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2007

The lack of Late Pleistocene human fossils from sub-Saharan Africa has limited paleontological testing of competing models of recent human evolution. We have dated a skull from Hofmeyr, South Africa, to 36.2 ± 3.3 thousand years ago through a combination of optically stimulated luminescence and uranium-series dating methods. The skull is morphologically modern overall but displays some archaic features. Its strongest morphometric affinities are w…

  • An investigation of the frequency of squatting facets in Later Stone Age foragers from South Africa

Open Access•N Dlamini, Nomusa Nomhle Dlamini et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2005•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Distinctive morphological changes attributed to a habitual squatting posture were observed on the distal femur, distal tibia and on the talar neck of Later Stone Age (LSA) foragers. The frequency of squatting in LSA foragers (n = 56) was determined by the presence of anatomical features of joint hyperflexion. Three South African comparative skeletal groups from different time periods were also analysed: skeletal remains of early farming populatio…

  • Diet and dental caries among later stone age inhabitants of the Cape Province, South Africa

    Open Access•Judith Sealy, J C Sealy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1992•Cited by: 21•References: 31

Stable carbon isotope measurements and incidences of dental caries are presented for three groups of prehistoric human skeletons from different regions of the Cape Province, South Africa. The isotopic analyses of bone collagen demonstrate the importance of marine foods in the diet and vary through time, across space, and according to sex. The incidence of dental caries ranges from 0% among heavily marine‐dependent individuals from the south‐weste…
