Influence of Childhood Adversity and Infection on Timing of Menarche in a Multiethnic Sample of Women
Childhood adversities (CAs) and infections may affect the timing of reproductive development. We examined the associations of indicators of CAs and exposure to tonsillitis and infectious mononucleosis (mono) with age at menarche. A multiethnic cohort of 400 women (ages 40-64 years) reported exposure to parental maltreatment and maladjustment during childhood and any diagnosis of tonsillitis and/or mono; infections primarily acquired in early life…

Measuring Urban Well-Being. Race and Gender Matter
Studies attempting to measure social well-being focus attention at national levels, failing to provide insights into the actual conditions that are present at sub-national levels. With increased attention being focused on the conditions of urban areas, the need for sub-national evaluation is becoming more apparent. Also, the growing diversity of the population and increase in female headed households leave researchers without resources for evalua…

An Empirical Test of the Institutionalist View on Income Inequality
This paper analyzes the relationship between income inequality and economic growth within the United States using state level data. It describes income inequality in the U.S. since 1960, then employs a two-step causal model to test the institutionalist contention that income inequality leads to socio-political instability, which has a negative impact on economic progress. The empirical results offer support for the institutionalist view
The magnitude of differences in perceived general health associated with educational level in the regions of Spain
STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare the relation between inequalities in perceived general health and education in the 17 regions of Spain. DESIGN AND METHODS: Data were taken from the 1993 Spanish Health Interview Survey. For each region we calculated the magnitude of inequality in perceived general health in association with educational level by a measure of association or effect and by a relative index of inequality. Both measures are odds…
Association between educational level and health related quality of life in Spanish adults
OBJECTIVE: To analyse differences in health by educational level in Spanish adults by comparing the health dimensions of the SF-36 Heath Survey. DESIGN: Data were taken from the National Survey on Drug Use carried out in February 1996. The information was collected by home personal interview. In addition to measuring the use of legal and illegal drugs and their associated health risks, the health status of the Spanish population was analysed usin…
Stable behaviors associated with adults' 10-year change in body mass index and likelihood of gain at the waist
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to identify behaviors associated with change in body mass index or with weight gain at the waist. METHODS: A cohort of 79236 White, non-Hispanic, healthy adults was questioned in 1982 and 1992 about diet and 10 physical activities. Estimates were made of the mean effects of stable behaviors on 10-year change in body mass index and on odds ratios for gain at the waist. RESULTS: Ten-year changes in body mas…
