Adolescent Reinforcement Survey Schedule
Three completed studies with the Adolescent Reinforcement Survey Schedule are reviewed and further studies are discussed
Japanese High School and College Students' Responses to the Adolescent Reinforcement Survey Schedule
Factor-analyzed correlations among items of the Japanese Adolescent Reinforcement Survey Schedule by Japanese high school students (N = 939) and college students (N = 500) were compared to investigate the changes in reinforcers between mid- and late adolescence, gender differences, and the specific groupings of reinforcers which suggest certain interventions for either or both groups of adolescents. The factor analysis yielded ten interpretable f…
Use of Imagery Procedures with Students Labeled ‘Trainable Retarded’
Two experiments are described in which covert-conditioning procedures were modified for use with two students enrolled in a class for “trainable retarded” within the public school system. This seems to be the first reported use of covert procedures with this population. The design, which used a multiple baseline across behaviors, was utilized to study the effect of covert procedures on inappropriate motor behaviors. The design included phases in …
Reinforcement Survey Schedules
Cautela has developed since 1977 a variety of reinforcement survey schedules to aid in the identification of reinforcing consequences. The history of the development of these scales, as well as directions for administration and scoring are presented. Suggestions for clinical use include developing rapport, shaping behavior during therapeutic sessions, devising specific treatment plans, and assessing treatment goals, among others. These suggestion…
A Children's Reinforcement Survey Schedule
This paper describes a Children's Reinforcement Survey Schedule based on the Reinforcement Survey Schedule developed by Cautela and Kastenbaum (1967). The children's schedule is presented in three forms. There are two, parallel short forms for children in kindergarten through Grade 3, and a long form for children in Grades 4 through 6. A reliability test in the form of a test-retest situation was administered on all three forms of the new scale a…
The Institutional Aversive Survey Schedule
The authors describe the use of the Institutional Aversive Survey Schedule developed for the identification of potential and present aversive stimuli by institutionalized patients. 112 patients in four hospitals were administered the questionnaire. Females ( n = 43) rated their environment more aversive than males ( n = 69). This finding is in agreement with similar results obtained with studies employing the Fear Survey Schedule. Hospitals were …
Reinforcement Survey Schedule
Since the publication of the Reinforcement Survey Schedule (Cautela & Kastenbaum, 1967), it has been widely used by many therapists and researchers in a variety of settings. This paper discusses the evaluation and extensions of the schedule since its original publication. Studies indicate that the schedule is reliable and valid under the conditions of assessment. Clinical applications of the schedule during the interview, for covert conditioning,…

Treatment of Smoking by Covert Sensitization
A detailed application of covert sensitization to smoking behavior is presented. Data are presented to indicate that the results of covert sensitization cannot be attributed to S's expectancies. The available evidence indicates that the technique is effective in modifying smoking behavior
A Reinforcement Survey Schedule for Use in Therapy, Training, and Research
This paper describes a Reinforcement Survey Schedule (RSS) that is intended to be useful in a variety of therapy, training, and research applications. The RSS has four sections: (a) reinforcers that can be presented in palpable, facsimile or imaginary form; (b) reinforcers that can be presented only in facsimile or imaginary form; (c) situational contexts that are reinforcing; and (d) a survey of frequently-occurring daily behaviors. The rational…
Covert Sensitization
A new treatment for maladaptive approach behavior (“covert sensitization”) is described. The term “covert” is used because neither the undesirable stimulus nor the aversive stimulus is actually presented. These stimuli are presented in imagination only. The word “sensitization” is used because the purpose of the procedure is to build up an avoidance response to the undesirable stimulus. A description and rationale for covert sensitization is pres…
Effect of Instructions on a Two-Choice Probability Learning Task
The purpose of this experiment was to determine the differential effects of instructions on a two-choice probability task. One set of instructions emphasized the number correct on each side. Another set of instructions emphasized neither of the above. The results indicated that differences in instructions did not lead to differences in subjective probability for the three groups. All groups tended toward matching behavior
Relation between Rate of Acquisition and Resistance to Extinction
Classical conditioning studies have usually indicated a negative relation between the rates of acquisition and extinction. In this study a positive significant correlation was found between the rate of acquisition and the rate of extinction of a task which involved a choice
