  • Figuring Lateness in Modern German Culture

    Karen Leeder•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2015•Cited by: 1

This introduction addresses the interrelated ideas of lateness, belatedness, anachronism, untimeliness, old age, and "late style" that run through this special issue. After a brief overview of recent thinking about time, especially in the transition from modernity to postmodernity, it sets up the possibilities of lateness as an intervention and form of (also political) resistance in the twentieth century and beyond. Aside from the field of old-ag…

  • After the Massacre of Illusions

    Karen Leeder•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2012

The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was founded on the specter of communism; it now haunts contemporary capitalism as unrealized aspiration, trauma, or travesty. This article focuses on the representation of the after-life of the GDR in the work of Volker Braun. It examines the dominant concern with mortality, death, revenants, and specters in his recent work, especially Tumulus (1999) and Auf die schönen Possen (Here's to the Good Times, 2005).…

  • Nachleben’

    Open Access•Karen Leeder•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2010•References: 5

This article focuses on the demise of the GDR, not as is often the case by looking at how it is nostalgically remembered or retrospectively re‐imagined, but more literally. Recent literature from the former GDR has been characterised by a fascination with death but also with spectrality; the revenant undead in the form of ghosts, spectres, vampires, and zombies. A notable example is the revival of the medieval ‘danse macabre’ in a series of conte…

  • The Poetry of Science and the Science of Poetry

    Open Access•Karen Leeder•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2007

This essay addresses the interest in science among modern German poets. Although, in the twentieth century at least, literature and science have often been considered quite separate cultures, it could be argued that they share similarities of mode and preoccupation, especially in the use of metaphor. Whether they are, however, ‘chance acquaintances’ or share more profound ‘affinities’ is examined with special reference to two distinguished young …

  • Erkenntnistheoretische Maschinen’

    Open Access•Karen Leeder•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2002

This paper examines a new mode in recent German poetry. Far from the poetry influenced by the recent re‐emergence of ‘pop’ culture, or the ‘Alltagssprache’ and ‘simple Storys’ of much recent writing from the former GDR, a number of poets have concerned themselves with modern science, particularly quantum mechanics and optics. These are among some of the most significant young poets of recent years (Thomas Kling, Franz Josef Czernin, Barbara Köhle…
