  • Reflections on Palestinian Identity

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•World Literature Today•2021

Seventy years of Palestinian fragmentation since Israel's creation have taken their toll. The Palestinians of today are split into different communities living different lives from one another. Here, a British Palestinian writer reflects on both the identity forced upon her and on the one she has created

  • The One-State Solution: An Alternative Vision for Israeli-Palestinian Peace

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•2011•Cited by: 5

This essay examines the one-state alternative to the commonly accepted two-state solution, which has been the basis of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process since 1993. It reviews the prospects for success of the two-state solution and sets out the arguments for and against such a settlement. The history and interpretation of the one-state alternative, whether binational or secular democratic, are explored, and the future chances of its success a…

  • Reconciliation in the Arab‐Israeli conflict

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•Mediterranean Politics•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The current Israeli‐Palestinian peace process is unlikely to lead to a durable peace between the two sides. This is because the process ignores the cultural aspects of the conflict. Israelis and Palestinians have opposing narratives of claim to the same land which will need to be addressed in any process of reconciliation. Without such a process, the conflict is likely to continue

  • After the Nakba: An Experience of Exile in England

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•1999•Cited by: 4

The year 1998, the fiftieth anniversary of the fall of Palestine, occasioned an outpouring of eyewitness and other accounts of the events of 1948. But relatively few accounts exist of how the displacement affected people's lives in the immediate wake of the exodus from Palestine. The following is one such account, a memoir of the author's early experience in postwar London

  • After Oslo: A single state in Israel/Palestine

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•Cambridge Review of International…•1998•References: 3

With the current suspension of the Oslo Agreements, one of the two pillars of the Israeli‐Palestinian peace process is for the timebeing defunct What therefore, are the prospects for the other pillar ‐ the two‐state solution? The recent history of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has been charcterised by unpredictable turns of events: the Oslo Accords, the Rabin‐Arafat handshake, increased autonomy for the Palestinian people. Thes…

  • The 1948 Exodus: A Family Story

    Ghada Karmi•ARTICLE•Journal of Palestine Studies•1994

The story of my family is not unusual in Palestinian terms. It is a story of displacement and exile and loss, replicated in thousands and thousands of cases where Palestinians fled or were driven out in order to make room for the establishment of the new State of Israel in 1948. It is also the story of how Zionism, a political ideology formed in Europe by Jews for Jews, came to affect the lives of a faraway Middle Eastern people who had not the r…
