  • New Trends in Daoist Studies

Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•The Journal of Asian Studies•2026

  • From Regal Way to Political Quietism

    Open Access•Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•Late imperial China•2025

This article examines the shifting status of Daoism in late imperial China through evolving biographical portrayals of the Ming prince Zhu Quan. It identifies a conflict between "textualist" scholars, who redefined Daoism as a set of ancient philosophical texts, and a "ritualist" community that upheld its ritual and political potency. The analysis unfolds in three parts: analyzing Zhu Quan's own presentation of himself as a divine bureaucrat wiel…

  • What Is Hell? How Daoism Challenges the Strong View

    Open Access•Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•Religions•2025•References: 28

This article argues that Daoism embodies a performative approach to hell. To make this argument, the first section summarizes the "strong view of hell". The second section explores how the Daoist text Scripture of the Three Offices (Sanguan jing 三官經) describes hell. The third section examines how the Daoist priest Nie Shihao 聶士豪 (fl. 1691) interprets this description of hell. His commentary shows that Chinese rituals constitute a venue whereby so…

  • Portrait of a Divine King

    Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•Monumenta Serica•2023

From the late Ming onwards, scholars have paid great attention to Zhu Quan’s (1378–1448) relationship with Daoism. They tend to explain the phenomenon with reference to the taohui hypothesis, which was first developed in Zhu Mouwei’s (1550–1624) Fanxianji. According to this hypothesis, Zhu Quan’s relationship with Daoism was a matter of survival and entailed a form of self-serving dissimulation. Apart from refuting this hypothesis, the present ar…

  • What is Sacrifice? Towards a Polythetic Definition with an Emphasis on African and Chinese Religions

    Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•Filosofia Theoretica Journal of…•2022

This paper asks a simple and yet extremely relevant question for scholars of religion: what is sacrifice? Rejecting monothetic definitions of sacrifice, I argue that the phenomenon must be understood as a polythetic class. In its two first sections, the paper discusses the evidence from African religions and Chinese religions, respectively. The last section is devoted to a comparative exercise through which I highlight the polythetic nature of sa…

  • Parting Ways

    Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•T oung Pao•2022

In the “Epistle” (“Shang tianfu shenyin jiashu” 上天府神隱家書), the Prince of Ning Zhu Quan 寧王朱權 (1378–1448) presents the book Shenyin 神隱 (Divine Hermitage) to Yongle (Zhu Di 朱棣, 1360–1424). The “Epistle” is the first document to announce Zhu Quan’s transition to the status of divine author True Lord from the Southern Pole. This article argues that the letter must be interpreted as a political act. Its three sections examine the letter in terms of its …

  • Daoism and Ming rulership

    Open Access•Bony Schachter•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•2022•References: 1

This article examines Jiajing's (Zhu Houcong 朱厚熜, 1507–67) preface to the Scripture of the Three Offices ( Sanguan jing 三官經, hereafter, Scripture ). The first section discusses the provenance of Jiajing's preface, and shows that the preface is preserved in the Explanation ( Sanguan jing zhujie 三官經註解), an unstudied edition of the Scripture produced in 1876. The second section offers a comparison between the Explanation and Ming editions of the Scr…
