A Genealogist’s Account of an “Impostor” Claiming Prophetic Descent
In 584/1188, a dispute arose in Aleppo over the lineage of two sharīfs. When the renowned genealogist and sharīf al-Jawwānī, then visiting the city, denied the validity of the lineage claimed by the sharīf ʿIzz al-ʿArab al-Idrīsī, ʿIzz al-ʿArab retaliated by denying al-Jawwānī’s own lineage. This study presents an English translation of the entry on ʿIzz al-ʿArab in Ibn al-ʿAdīm’s local biographical dictionary Bughyat al-ṭalab fī taʾrīkh Ḥalab, w…
Alid-Najafi Genealogists and a Twelver Shi‘i Network in an Era of Supraconfessional Philo-‘Alidism
This study examines a notebook compiled in the latter half of the fifteenth century by an ‘Alid expert on the genealogy of the kin of ‘Ali b. Abi Talib to shed light on the attitudes of the Twelver Shi‘i community during an era often noted for the rise of supraconfessional philo-‘Alidism. The codex reveals the activities of its compiler and three earlier ‘Alid genealogists, all of whom may be characterized as Najafi in one sense or another. The n…

An Enigmatic Genealogical Chart of the Timurids
This article discusses a genealogical chart drawn in the second half of the fifteenth century that presents a hitherto unknown genealogy as that of the Timurids. A close reading of the genealogy reveals that it presents a pattern of legitimation prevalent among the Yasavi Sufis of Central Asia. The genealogy is based on an Islamization narrative featuring holy warriors purportedly descended from Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyya who supposedly ruled the a…
Sayyid Ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd
This article demonstrates that Sayyid Ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, a close associate of Özbek Khan of the Golden Horde, was an expert in sayyid genealogy hailing from Najaf or Kufa and a member of a Twelver Shiʿi network that connected him to the sect’s centers in Iraq. It then discusses the implications of this finding for our understanding of the religious environment surrounding Özbek and of the activities of the Twelver Shiʿi community under Mongol rul…
New Evidence for Timurid Claims to ʻAlid Descent
This article discusses a genealogical chart drawn in the third quarter of the fifteenth century CE (probably in the first half of the 1460s) in Iraq, most likely in Najaf, which presents the Timurids as descendants of ʻAli b. Abī Ṭālib through his son Muḥammad b. al-Ḥanafiyya. This genealogical chart presents a hitherto unknown ʻAlid genealogy as that of the Timurids. It thus appears to testify to a Timurid attempt at "ʻAlidizing" themselves that…

The Earliest cAlid Genealogy for the Safavids
Studies on the pre-dynastic claim of the Safavids to sayyid status suffer from a dearth of primary source materials. Scholars have advanced various conjectures, but it is not yet clear when the Safavids began to promote this claim or indeed when the so-called “official” Musavid genealogy was developed. This study presents a genealogical chart drawn in the third quarter of the fifteenth century (most probably in the 1460s) in Iraq (most likely in …
Relationships of personality and lifestyle with mobile phone dependence among female nursing students
To clarify the relationships of personality and lifestyle with mobile phone dependence, defined as an intermittent craving to use a mobile phone or excessive mobile phone use, we administered a self-report questionnaire to 132 female college students attending a nursing school in Osaka, Japan. Results of multiple regression analysis indicated that scores for extroversion and neuroticism were positively related to the score of the Mobile Phone Dep…
Mobile Phone Dependence of Female Students and Perceived Parental Rearing Attitudes
Using a written questionnaire we surveyed a sample population of 155 female students, and investigated the associations between mobile phone dependence and perceived parental rearing attitudes. Participants completed the Mobile Phone Dependence Questionnaire (MPDQ; Toda, Monden, Kubo, & Morimoto, 2004) and the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI; Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979). In relation to maternal rearing attitudes, analysis of responses reveal…
Parental Rearing Attitudes and Health-Related Lifestyle of University Students
Using a written questionnaire survey of 200 first-year university students, we investigated associations between parental rearing attitudes and health-related lifestyle. Participants completed the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI; Parker, Tupling, & Brown, 1979) and the Health Practice Index (HPI; Hagihara & Morimoto, 1991). We found that more female respondents with unhealthy lifestyles perceived their parents as having been overprotective. No s…

Health-Related Lifestyle and Patterns of Behavior Related to Health Effects of Leisure Travel
Whether or not leisure travel might have positive effects on personal health was investigated. During a short leisure trip, saliva samples were collected from 40 females. Levels of salivary cortisol and chromogranin A (CgA) were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). To quantitatively evaluate the health-related lifestyle and the patterns of behavior of the subjects, we also administered written questionnaires. For samples taken …
Mobile Phone Dependence and Health-Related Lifestyle of University Students
This study investigated the associations between the intensity of mobile phone use and health-related lifestyle. For 275 university students, we evaluated health-related lifestyle using the Health Practice Index (HPI; Hagihara & Morimoto, 1991; Kusaka, Kondou, & Morimoto, 1992) and analyzed responses to a questionnaire (MPDQ; Toda, Monden, Kubo, & Morimoto, 2004) designed, with a self-rating scale, to gauge mobile phone dependence. For males, the…

Ramadan Fasting – Effect on Healthy Muslims
The purpose of this review was to ascertain the effects on healthy Muslims of fasting during Ramadan. We found some changes such as weight loss, evidence of dehydration, increase in serum uric acid, and nonpharmacological improvement in lipid parameters. We also observed changes in daily lifestyles and mental-health status. Thus, observance of the Ramadan fasting has both positive and adverse effects on healthy individuals. The adverse effects, h…
