  • Sargonic dinner at Kaneš: The Old Assyrian Sargon legend

    Open Access•Bendt Alster, Takayoshi Oshima•ARTICLE•Iraq•2007

A very unusual literary tablet, Kt. j/k 97 from Kültepe, was published by C. Günbattı in 1997. It is inscribed with what already the first editor described as an Old Assyrian version of legends about Sargon. Since then the tablet has caused a good deal of discussion. Translations or editions have been made by M. Van De Mieroop (2000), K. Hecker (2001), B. Foster (2002, 2005), A. Cavigneaux (2005), and J. G. Dercksen (2005). These studies represen…

  • New Sources for Dumuzi's Dream

    Bendt Alster•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Assyriologie und…•2006

The article contains a summary of sources for the Sumerian composition Dumuzi's Dream that have become known since the edition by Alster (1972). A particularly interesting tablet from Susa published by Durand (1990) with many unusual syllabic writings is edited in its entirety. Two new sources from the California Museum of Ancient Art in Los Angeles are published for the first time, resulting in an improved reconstruction of lines 71–89. Two sour…

  • Demons in the conclusion of Lugalbanda in Hurrumkurra

    Open Access•Bendt Alster•ARTICLE•Iraq•2005

The Sumerian epic of Lugalbanda in Hurrumkurra has not yet been edited in its entirety, but important contributions have been made in particular by CI. Wilcke and W. W. Hallo (Wilcke 1969, Hallo 1983, cf. Wilcke 1987). There now exist two complete translations: one by J. A. Black from 1998 (1998: 176–84), virtually identical with the translation accessible on the website of the University of Oxford's Electronic Text Corpus of Sumerian Literature …

Four versions of an episode in the Sumerian composition ‘Gilgamesh and Huwawa’ are discussed here. The encounter of Gilgamesh and Huwawa is interpreted in terms of Gilgamesh playing the role of a visitor received in audience at a foreign court. His gifts aim at inviting Huwawa to reciprocate, and thereby give up his protection. Gilgamesh especially exploits Huwawa's social isolation and lack of noble ancestry by offering him his two sisters, one …
