Attribution of the 2020 surge in atmospheric methane by inverse analysis of Gosat observations
Atmospheric methane mixing ratio rose by 15 ppbv between 2019 and 2020, the fastest growth rate on record. We conduct a global inverse analysis of 2019–2020 Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite observations of atmospheric methane to analyze the combination of sources and sinks driving this surge. The imbalance between sources and sinks of atmospheric methane increased by 31 Tg a −1 from 2019 to 2020, representing a 36 Tg a −1 forcing (direct chan…
Sustained methane emissions from China after 2012 despite declining coal production and rice-cultivated area
China’s anthropogenic methane emissions are the largest of any country in the world. A recent study using atmospheric observations suggested that recent policies aimed at reducing emissions of methane due to coal production in China after 2010 had been largely ineffective. Here, based on a longer observational record and an updated modelling approach, we find a statistically significant positive linear trend (0.36 ± 0.04 ( ± 1 σ ) Tg CH 4 yr −2 )…
Rain-fed pulses of methane from East Africa during 2018–2019 contributed to atmospheric growth rate
East Africa is a key location for wetland emissions of methane (CH 4 ), driven by variations in rainfall that are in turn influenced by sea-surface temperature gradients over the Indian Ocean. Using satellite observations of CH 4 and an atmospheric chemistry-transport model, we quantified East African CH 4 emissions during 2018 and 2019 when there was 3- σ anomalous rainfall during the long rains (March–May) in 2018 and the short rains (October–D…
The Global Methane Budget 2000–2017
Understanding and quantifying the global methane (CH4) budget is important for assessing realistic pathways to mitigate climate change. Atmospheric emissions and concentrations of CH4 continue to increase, making CH4 the second most important human-influenced greenhouse gas in terms of climate forcing, after carbon dioxide (CO2). The relative importance of CH4 compared to CO2 depends on its shorter atmospheric lifetime, stronger warming potential…
The Effects of Evaluative Context on Performance
This study proposed that evaluative situations influence individual performance by raising concerns about self-and social-evaluations. When an individual performs a task, the individual's performance may be subject to two types of evaluation: self-evaluation and evaluation by others. Often, the basis of evaluation is the performance of others, i.e., social comparison. In such cases, an individual may increase performance to protect self-and socia…
