Afrika I

West Africa and its early empires
Introduction The Arab conquest of North Africa was a prelude to a series of developments that reshaped the western part of the ancient world and the way it was viewed. When the general ʿUqba ibn Nāfiʿ al-Fihrī, who was later to become the glorious eponym of numerous Saharan tribes, reached the Atlantic shores (shortly after 63/682), not only had the ‘westernmost’ part, al-Maghrib al-aqṣā , been discovered and included into the Islamic cosmos, but…
West Africa (tenth–twelfth/sixteenth–eighteenth centuries)
Introduction Towards the end of the ninth/fifteenth century, West Africa’s externality to the Muslim world began to end. Some of the phenomena of this process are easily detected; others are blurred, taking shape only vaguely. The first appearance of the Portuguese caravels on the Atlantic coast in the 1440s heralded a new era. Its immediate effects, however, remained restricted to the coastal regions where the rival European powers founded milit…
The New Cambridge History of Islam

The volume embraces a vast area from al-Andalus and North Africa to Arabia and the lands of the Ottomans. In the first four sections, scholars – all leaders in their particular fields - chart the rise and f…
A QĀḌī'S Errors
Reflections on qāḍī -error form part of the early Islamic legal tradition. Growth in the framework of the legal apparatus compelled Muslim jurists to address the notion of fallibility in a more complex manner. From the ninth century onwards, jurists identified particular aspects of qāḍī -error ( khaṭa’ al-qāḍī ) and gave them independant treatment. The ontological proximity of qāḍī -error to certain theological oncepts did not allow for simple an…

Arabic mathematical manuscripts in Mauretania
A discussion of the mathematical manuscripts of Mauretania requires an overall introduction to this almost completely unexplored literature. Its foundations must first be established. Between the years 1978 and 1985 a project financed initially by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (BRD), then by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, was entrusted to Dr. Rainer Oßwald and myself by the Mauretanian Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Its objective was the co…
