  • Exploring the spectral variation hypothesis for α- and β-diversity: A comparison of open vegetation and forests

    Open Access•Christine I B Wallis, Shan Kothari et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2024

Airborne hyperspectral imaging holds great promise for estimating plant diversity and composition, given its unprecedented combination of aerial coverage, spatial resolution, and spectral detail. Recently, there has been renewed attention toward the spectral variation hypothesis (SVH), which predicts that higher spectral variation is correlated with greater plant diversity. While several studies have highlighted methodological challenges involved…

  • Environmental impacts of renting rangelands: Integrating remote sensing and household surveys at the parcel level

Open Access•Luci Lu, Ping Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Land rental markets are growing worldwide and facilitate efficient utilization of land. However, the short duration of occupancy and limited property rights mean that rental contracts may discourage longer-term sustainable land management. Direct investigation into the relationship between land tenure and ecological outcomes has been hampered by scale-appropriate data on land tenure, resource management, and land outcomes. In this paper, we addre…

  • Challenging slopes: Ethnic minority livelihoods, state visions, and land-use land cover change in Vietnam’s northern mountainous borderlands

Open Access•An Thinh Nguyen, Sarah Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2022

  • Smallholder agriculture results in stable forest cover in riverine Amazonia

Open Access•Oliver T Coomes, Margaret Kalácska et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Recent studies point to a rapid increase in small-scale deforestation in Amazonia. Where people live along the rivers of the basin, customary shifting cultivation creates a zone of secondary forest, orchards and crop fields around communities in what was once was old-growth terra firme forest. Visible from satellite imagery as a narrow but extensive band of forest disturbance along rivers, this zone is often considered as having been deforested. …

  • Relationships between Economic and Environmental Factors, and Labour Migration to Réunion, 1820–1860

    Open Access•J Pablo Arroyo‐mora, J Pablo Arroyo-Mora et al.•CHAPTER•The Palgrave Handbook of Bondage…•2019

This chapter compliments that of Chap. 4 in examining the applicability of new spatial and temporal paradigms, and the use of Bayesian Network analysis, for interpreting the history of indentured labour migration in the southwest Indian Ocean World (IOW). It does so in the context of human-environment interaction. A core element of the environmental side of this relationship was the monsoon system of winds and currents that was of fundamental imp…

  • Using police seizure data and hyperspectral imagery to estimate the size of an outdoor cannabis industry

Margaret Kalácska, Martin Bouchard•ARTICLE•Police Practice and Research•2011

In this paper, we take advantage of aerial police detection data and compare them to an analysis of airborne hyperspectral imagery to estimate the size of outdoor cannabis production in a high density cultivation area located in British Columbia, Canada. The results suggest that law enforcement missed at least 75% of the existing cultivation sites during the operation. Based on this ratio, the total number of cultivation sites in the island/coast…
