  • Understanding Utilization and Prevention Measures Associated With a Caries Risk Assessment in Oral Health Transformation

Open Access•Melody McGee, Ryan Brandon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2025

The utilization of the ADA CRA CDT codes, designed to stratify patients into caries risk categories of low, moderate, or high, was relatively low compared to the examination and prevention procedure claims. Consistent utilization of these codes would allow for more effective monitoring of patient outcomes, supporting a data-driven approach to assessing oral health over time

  • Applying HCI Principles in Designing Usable Systems for Dentistry

    Open Access•Elsbeth Kalenderian, Muhammad F Walji•CHAPTER•Human Computer Interaction in…•2024

  • Systematically assessing the quality of dental electronic health record data for an investigation into oral health care disparities

Open Access•Krishna Kumar Kookal, Muhammad F Walji et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2024

The NIHPTC framework proved to be a useful approach, to identify, document, and characterize the dataset. The concepts of completeness, accuracy, and consistency were adapted by the multidisciplinary research team and the overall quality of the data are demonstrated to be of high quality

  • Development of quality measures to assess tooth decay outcomes from electronic health record data

Open Access•Ryan Brandon, Suhasini Bangar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2022

Methods were developed and validated for assessing timely treatment of decay and occurrence of new decay derived from EHR data, creating effective outcome measures. These EHR-based quality measures produce accurate and reliable results that support efforts and advancement in quality assessment, quality improvement, patient care and research

  • Increasing value, reducing waste: Tailoring the application of dental sealants according to individual caries risk

Open Access•Alfa Yansane, Stefan Listl et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2020

Implementation of caries risk stratified fissure sealant quality measures demonstrates the potential for extracting better value in oral health care

  • Tobacco screening and cessation efforts by dental providers: A quality measure evaluation

Open Access•Ana Neumann, Shwetha V Kumar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2018

We demonstrated the successful implementation of a DQM to evaluate screening rates for tobacco use and cessation intervention. There is substantial variation in the cessation intervention rates across sites, and these results are a call for action for the dental profession to employ tobacco evidence-based cessation strategies to improve oral health and general health outcomes

  • Dental Providers’ Perspectives on Diagnosis-Driven Dentistry: Strategies to Enhance Adoption of Dental Diagnostic Terminology

    Open Access•Enihomo Obadan‐Udoh, Enihomo Obadan-Udoh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

The routine use of standardized diagnostic terminologies (DxTMs) in dentistry has long been the subject of academic debate. This paper discusses the strategies suggested by a group of dental stakeholders to enhance the uptake of DxTMs. Through unstructured interviewing at the 'Toward a Diagnosis-Driven Profession' National Conference held on 19 March 2016 in Los Angeles, CA, USA participants were asked how enthusiastic they were about implementin…

  • Dental clinical research: An illustration of the value of standardized diagnostic terms

Open Access•Elsbeth Kalenderian, Oluwabunmi Tokede et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2015

Our results showed that most patients with CMP were not treated according to the AAP guidelines. On the basis of this use case, we conclude that the availability and habitual use of a structured diagnosis in an EHR allow for the aggregation and secondary analyses of clinical data to support downstream analyses for quality improvement and epidemiological assessments
