Piloting a data dashboard to support data-informed health promotion in secondary schools
The Dashboard presents an opportunity for data-informed health and well-being practice and could also support schools to meet education system requirements, providing school staff receive appropriate training. This paper offers novel practical, policy-relevant insights on the interaction of digital dashboards with school systems, capacity constraints, and professional learning needs and valuable insights for public health systems seeking to suppo…
Developing and validating a prediction model of adolescent major depressive disorder in the offspring of depressed parents
BACKGROUND: Parental depression is common and is a major risk factor for depression in adolescents. Early identification of adolescents at elevated risk of developing major depressive disorder (MDD) in this group could improve early access to preventive interventions. METHODS: Using longitudinal data from 337 adolescents at high familial risk of depression, we developed a risk prediction model for adolescent MDD. The model was externally validate…

Fluoridation referendum in La Crosse, Wisconsin
Residents of La Crosse, Wisconsin approved a public referendum in favor of water fluoridation on April 5, 1988. The vote, 57 percent supportive, culminated a two-year community effort. Three public referenda had been defeated in the past. Contributing to the success of this recent campaign were: broad-based community support led by a 34-member Citizens for Better Dental Health in La Crosse Committee; American Dental Association/Wisconsin Division…
Correlates of smokeless tobacco use in a male adolescent population
This paper identifies the correlates of smokeless tobacco use in a sample of 1,030 males representative of 7th through 12th grade students of Dane County (Madison), Wisconsin. Variables independently associated with frequent use of smokeless tobacco were: being White; living in other than a two-parent home; performing poorly in school; smoking cigarettes; consuming beer, wine, or hard liquor; and deviant/delinquent behavior. The Effects for Recall Patients of a Comprehensive Sealant Program in a Clinical Dental Public Health Setting
The preventive outcomes of a comprehensive sealant program in a dental public health treatment center for low SES children are reported. The Linn County (Iowa) Dental Health Center implemented a comprehensive sealant philosophy in 1978. Since then, virtually all pits and fissures in primary and permanent teeth for all new and recall patients have been sealed. The comprehensive sealant philosophy was formulated following a previously reported Dent…
The School‐Based Dental Care Systems of New Zealand and South Australia—a Decade of Change
The purpose of this paper is to review and update the highly successful school-based dental care systems of the country of New Zealand and the state of South Australia. These school-based systems have undergone changes in the past 10 years. The New Zealand Dental Service has greatly reduced the number of dental nurses in training. Declining birth rates, changes in disease patterns, revision of diagnostic criteria, and longer employment trends in …
Linn County Dental Health Center‐A Successful Dental Public Health Access Program of Treatment and Prevention
The Linn County Dental Health Center is an example of what appears to be a highly successful dental society access program. A target population, the children of the poor and working poor in Linn County, have an opportunity to enter a system of continuous dental care for the prevention and control of dental disease. This example of dental society and community involvement, in the form of the ADA's guidelines for establishment and management of suc…
Continuity of Care in a County Dental Public Health Center
Examination of continuity of care, periodic preventive dental visits in a county dental public health center, was the focus of this study. The purpose of the study was to investigate: a) the relation between continuity of care and untreated dental caries, the unmet restorative dental treatment need, in low SES children in a county dental health center; and b) the association of certain family characteristics with continuity of care. If children f…
