Creating systems aligned with the triple‐aim and v alue‐based care
HealthPartners is an integrated health care system in the upper Midwest striving to provide value-based care that aligns with the triple-aim care. The dental delivery system at HealthPartners is focused on prevention by utilizing risk assessment tools (caries, periodontal disease, and oral cancer) built in to our record system. Integration with medical delivery system is facilitated by a shared electronic health record. Measurement is critical to…
Supplementing online surveys with a mailed option to reduce bias and improve response rate
Even in an era of increasingly electronic communication by dentists, not including a paper option when conducting surveys can result in overestimation of the prevalence of key dental practice characteristics
Utilization of nondentist providers and attitudes toward new provider models
Expanding scopes of practice for dental hygienists and assistants has not translated to the maximal delegation allowed by law among network practices. This finding may provide insight into dentists' acceptance of newer nondentist provider models
Use of online sources of information by dental practitioners
A relatively small proportion of dental practitioners use information from online sources for practice guidance. Variation exists regarding practitioners' use of online source resources and how they rate the value of offline information sources for practice guidance
Institutional review board and regulatory solutions in The Dental PBRN
Instead of viewing IRBs and institutional administrators as potentially adversarial, customized solutions can be identified by engaging them in collegial discussions that identify common ground within regulatory bounds. Although time-intensive and complex, these solutions improve acceptability of practice-based research to patients, practitioners, and university researchers
Oral Health Program Preferences among Pregnant Women in a Managed Care Organization
Similarities in program preferences suggest that common interventions could be designed that would appeal to both groups without extensive tailoring
The Relationship Between Cardiovascular Xerogenic Medication Intake and the Incidence of Crown/Root Restorations
This study provides objective quantification of cardiovascular medication's long-term effects on increased restorations in older adults. When grouped under a single category labeled "cardiovascular", drugs with effects targeting the cardiovascular system did not appear to unequivocally lead to higher restorative experiences
Validation of a Simple Approach to Caries Risk Assessment
The results of this study provide the first large-scale, generalizable evidence for the validity of dentists' subjective assessment of caries risk
Development of Effectiveness of Care and Use of Services Measures for Dental Care Plans
These standardized measures for dental care plan performance are available for immediate use. However, because the measures depend on diagnostic information (periodontal probing data and diagnoses associated with restorative treatments) in the administrative data set, their adoption will require changes in most plans' data systems and data collection policies
Evaluation of Audit‐based Performance Measures for Dental Care Plans
The audit-based proxy measures represent a complex but feasible approach to the calculation of performance measures for those programs lacking robust administrative data systems. However, until charts contain more complete diagnostic information (i.e., periodontal charting and diagnostic codes or reason-for-treatment codes), accurate determination of these aspects of clinical performance will be difficult
