An assessment of dental caries among young Aboriginal children in New South Wales, Australia
There was a high prevalence of untreated dental caries among the Aboriginal children, particularly for those in remote locations
Developing and Testing of an Oral Health Screening Tool for Midwives to Assess Pregnant Woman
Maternal oral health is important, and midwives are encouraged to screen women for dental problems. We aimed to develop and test a midwifery oral health screening tool. A three-item tool was tested as part of a trial involving 300 women in Southwestern Sydney. A two-item combination showed better sensitivity (98%) and had a positive predictive value of 88%. Specificity was 40%, and negative predictive value was 80%. A two-item screening tool has …
Dental caries in 14- and 15-year-olds in New South Wales, Australia
The NSW Teen Dental Survey provided state-wide data that will contribute to the national picture on adolescent oral health. The mean DMFT score of 1.2 is similar to the national caries experience data for this age group from the Australian Child Dental Health Survey in 2009
A phase II clinical trial of a dental health education program delivered by aboriginal health workers to prevent early childhood caries

Child and family health nurses' experiences of oral health of preschool children
This study highlights that oral health problems are a significant segment of the child health problems identified by nurses in their daily work. The nurses perceived the problem of dental caries to be one of a lack of parental knowledge, and families should be educated not only on "what" but also on "how" to feed their children. The primary healthcare team should work collaboratively to educate families in a culturally appropriate way
How to do a grounded theory study
BACKGROUND: Qualitative methodologies are increasingly popular in medical research. Grounded theory is the methodology most-often cited by authors of qualitative studies in medicine, but it has been suggested that many 'grounded theory' studies are not concordant with the methodology. In this paper we provide a worked example of a grounded theory project. Our aim is to provide a model for practice, to connect medical researchers with a useful met…
Early childhood feeding practices and dental caries in preschool children
This study will provide evidence of the association of early childhood feeding practices and the oral health of preschool children. In addition, information will be collected on breastfeeding practices and the oral health concerns of mothers living in disadvantaged areas in South Western Sydney
Successful fluoride plebiscite in the township of Deniliquin, New South Wales, Australia
The council resolved to implement water fluoridation and the residents received fluoridated water in January 2005
The Occurrence of Dental Pain and Extractions over a 3‐Year Period in a Cohort of Children Aged 3‐6 Years
The majority of children attending general dental practice remained caries-free and did not experience pain or extraction over 3 years. Children with caries had a substantial risk of developing pain or having an extraction. The study was unable to demonstrate that restoring carious primary molar teeth prevents pain and extraction
A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of a Dental Health Education Program for 10‐year‐old Children
The children receiving the program had significantly lower mean plaque scores and greater knowledge about toothbrushes and disclosing tablets than the control children who had not received the program
A Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial Testing the Effectiveness of a School‐based Dental Health Education Program for Adolescents
This cluster randomized control trial demonstrated that the intervention program resulted in an improvement in knowledge of dental disease and an increase in the reported duration of brushing. These improvements were accompanied by a significant improvement in oral hygiene and a reported reduction in gingival bleeding
