Leisure activity and daily mood across adulthood: Results from the Korean Time Use Survey
Objectives Leisure activities are known to promote health and well-being in adulthood, yet little is known about how different types and patterns of leisure engagement are associated with daily mood and which characteristics of leisure are more beneficial for adults at different stages of life, with varying work and family commitments. Methods Using 2-day time diaries from the 2019 Korean Time Use Survey (participant N = 22,821; age 20–84), this …
A Seeking Safety Mobile App for Recovery from PTSD and Substance Use Disorder: Results of a Randomized Controlled Trial
BACKGROUND: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) co-occur frequently and have deleterious impact. Seeking Safety (SS) - an evidence-based, present-focused, coping skills model - lends itself to mobile app delivery. OBJECTIVES: A novel SS mobile app is compared to a control app that lacks the interactivity, social engagement, and feature-richness of the SS app. We hypothesized that the SS app would outperform the c…
Housework sharing among older couples: Explaining the gendered division of domestic labour in older age in South Korea
Our study investigates the relationship between family models and housework division among older couples. Using the 2019 Korean Time Use Survey, we analysed wives' share of housework in four family models—dual-earner, traditional (husband-breadwinner), wife-breadwinner, and retired (non-employed) couples—in which at least one partner was aged 65 or above (N = 1,564). Results show that although wives' housework share varies across the four family …
Unpacking Family Caregiving Types for Older Adults in South Korea: Insights from Time Use Indicators
Population aging has led to an increase in the amount of time families spend providing unpaid care to older members of Korean society. To address these limitations and gain insight into caregivers' daily lives, we examine the family caregivers' daily experience by analyzing six objective and subjective indicators related to time u…

Understanding the Time Pressure of Working Parents: How Parents' Childcare Time Impacts the Diurnal Organization of Activities and the Sense of Feeling Rushed
Time pressure of parents has become an important policy agenda in many contemporary societies. This study aims to examine the association between parental childcare time and subjective time pressure (feeling rushed) by taking into account different types of diurnal activity patterns. From the background of time fragmentation as a structural source of time pressure we introduce two specific types of diurnal time use activities, namely activity res…
Convergence in Sleep Time Accomplished? Gender Gap in Sleep Time for Middle-Aged Adults in Korea
Although the gender gap in sleep time has narrowed significantly in the last decade, middle-aged women between ages 35 and 60 still sleep less than their male counterparts in Korea. This study examines and provides evidence for factors contributing to the gender gap in this age group. Using Korean Time Use Survey (KTUS) data from 2004, 2009 and 2014, we find that middle-aged women’s difficulty in managing work-life balance and traditional role ex…
