    Open Access•Aderonke A Akinkugbe, John C Duffy et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2024

Objective: Maternal iodine plays a central role in fetal neurodevelopment. It is recommended that pregnant women consume sufficient levels of iodine to accommodate increased need for mother and fetus. We examined associations among prenatal dietary and supplemental iodine intake and infant temperament. Design: The PRogramming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) study is an ongoing longitudinal pregnancy cohort. Data from 2011 to 2020 w…

Open Access•Folasayo Adunola, Mark D Macek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2023

  • Sars-CoV-2 Vaccine Hesitancy in a Sample of US Adults

Open Access•Sarah Bauerle Ba, Sarah Bauerle Bass et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Understanding which communities are most likely to be vaccine hesitant is necessary to increase vaccination rates to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2. This cross-sectional survey of adults ( n = 501) from three cities in the United States (Miami, FL, New York City, NY, San Francisco, CA) assessed the role of satisfaction with health and healthcare access and consumption of COVID-19 news, previously un-studied variables related to vaccine hesitanc…

  • Private and social religious coping on life satisfaction

Oswaldo Moreno, Kelcie Willis et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2021

This study aimed to examine the direct effects of private and social religious coping on perceived life satisfaction. The secondary aim was to investigate whether cultural factors (i.e., enculturation, acculturation, biculturalism) moderate this relationship. A total of 100 Latinx individuals (78% immigrants) completed measures on religious coping, life satisfaction, acculturation, enculturation, and biculturalism. There was a positive direct rel…

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences and Oral Health Outcomes in U.S. Children and Adolescents

Open Access•Alyssa Simon, Jamie Cage et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

This study investigated the cross-sectional associations between exposure to nine Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and U.S. children's and adolescent's oral health outcomes. Data from 41,294 participants of the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) were analyzed. Past year exposure to ACE, oral health outcomes (decayed teeth, bleeding gums, and condition of the teeth), and child and caregiver sociodemographic factors were self-repo…

  • Lifestyle risk factor related disparities in oral cancer examination in the U.S

    Open Access•Aderonke A Akinkugbe, Dina T García et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

This study showed that smokers and alcohol users were less likely than abstainers to self-report a past year oral cancer examination. Access to affordable and targeted oral cancer examination within the dental care setting might ensure that these high-risk individuals get timely examinations and earlier diagnosis that might improve prognosis and survival

  • Perceived dental care need and actual oral health status in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL)

Open Access•Aderonke A Akinkugbe, Raskin E Sarah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2020

In bivariate analysis, self-reported type of dental care needed appear indicative of actual oral disease state and may be of value for the surveillance of oral diseases when clinical measures are unattainable. In multivariable prediction modeling, these subjective measures had low PPVs thus limiting the generalizability of our findings. Nonetheless, validation and refinement of these constructs in other populations is warranted
