Land Reform and Regicide in Late Fifteenth-Century Iran
This article examines appendices to an unpublished, miscatalogued falconry manual titled Bāznāmah . Composed by Sarbandi, an avian veterinarian attending the Aqquyunlu court, these addenda were completed early in August 1491, eight months after the death of the Aqquyunlu ruler, Yaʿqub (r. 1478–1490). Covering events from 1489 to 1491, Sarbandi’s account sheds light on aspects of bureaucratic responses to dynastic crises. This study focuses on two…
Chronicling a Dynasty on the Make
This article studies Qāsim Beg Ḥayātī Tabrīzī's unpublished account of Ṣafavid history, which has long been considered lost. Ḥayātī's account-dedicated, in 961/1554, to Shah Ṭahmāsp's sister, Princess Mihīn Begum (d. 969/1562)-spans the period between the formative years of the Ṣafaviyya Sufi order under Ṣafī al-Dīn Isḥāq Ardabīlī (d. 735/1334) and the early years of the reign of Shah Ismāʿīl (907-30/1501-24). Emphasis is given to the way in whic…
A Forgotten Money Heist
This present article examines aspects of Iran’s trade and diplomatic relations with Imperial Russia during the reign of the Afsharid Nadir Shah (r. 1735–1747) focusing on a previously unpublished letter from the Zand Karim Khan (r. 1751–1779) to Empress Catherine II (r. 1762–1796). The letter sheds light on a little-known trade dispute between Iran and Imperial Russia that broke out shortly after Nadir Shah’s assassination, which took place in hi…
A Safavid Bureaucrat in the Ottoman World
On the margins of minority life
This article looks at the treatment of the Zoroastrians by central and provincial authorities in early modern Yazd, Kirman and Isfahan, emphasizing the institutional weaknesses of the central orkhāṣṣaprotection they were supposed to benefit from under the Safavids (907-1135/1501-1722). It is argued that the maltreatment the Zoroastrians endured under the Safavids had little to do with religious bigotry. Rather, it arose from rivalries between the…
A Reply to Rudi Matthee
Rudi Matthee's book has several key problems, which I discussed already in my review. Here I will provide evidence for two main issues that I see in the book. These issues are the limited use of Persian primary sources, and a tendency to make very broad claims based on very limited evidence
