  • Creating a digital historical map of the German-inhabited areas in southern Transylvania (central Romania) in 1848

    Open Access•Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2023

The paper describes the creation of a historical reference map of the mid-southern region of Transylvania (nowadays in central Romania) in 1848. This area was shaped by the presence of the Transylvanian Saxons, the ethnic German descendants of the settlers invited here by the kings of Hungary during the High Middle Ages. Transylvania became part of the Habsburg Empire at the end of the seventeenth century and was elevated to the status of a Grand…

  • From Silent Marginality to Spotlight Scapegoating? A Brief Case Study of France's Policy Towards the Roma

    Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•New Community•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 4

This article addresses the way in which the Roma were framed as an important 'security issue' on the French public policy agenda during the Sarkozy presidency. By pointing out continuities and discontinuities in the association between 'immigation' and 'insecurity' in official discourse, it analyses the somehow unexpected and sudden scapegoating of the Roma as responding to immediate political imperatives, but also as an expression of a mounting …

  • The Politics of Roma Migration: Framing Identity Struggles among Romanian and Bulgarian Roma in the Paris region

    Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•New Community•2011•Cited by: 8•References: 8

The aim of this paper is to understand how identity shapes the politics of Roma migration at European, national and local scales. I studied Romanian and Bulgarian Roma migrants living in slums around Paris through participant observation and in-depth interviews. I analyse the interplay of political and social intervention concerning this population, with an emphasis on humanitarian medical intervention. In these interactions, the Roma identity is…

    Open Access•Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•Sociologie du Travail•2011•Cited by: 14•References: 39

    Myriam Hachimi Alaoui, Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•Hommes & migrations•2010•Cited by: 5

    Open Access•Alexandra Nacu•ARTICLE•Revue européenne des migrations…•2010•Cited by: 14•References: 9
