Social inequities in general health and oral health among Australian adults over time
Social inequality in health is a persistent and growing concern worldwide. The study aimed to describe and analyse social disparities in general and oral health among Australian adults over time. This study utilised two population-based cross-sectional survey data: the National Survey of Adult Oral Health (NSAOH) conducted in 2004-06 (NSAOH-1, n = 14,123) and 2017-18 (NSAOH-2, n = 15,731) in Australia. Representative samples of adults aged 15 yea…
Poor Self-Rated Sleep Quality and Quantity Associated with Poor Oral Health-Related Quality of Life among Indigenous Australian Adults
The average number of sleep hours for Indigenous participants were lower than recommended (7-8 h/night). Our findings indicate that poor sleep quality and quantity, and oral health-related behaviours associated with sleep deprivation were positively associated with poor oral health related quality of life among Indigenous Australian adults
Knowledge and Awareness of HPV, the HPV Vaccine and Cancer-Related HPV Types among Indigenous Australians
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection is a common, preventable, sexually transmitted disease with oncogenic potential and increasing incidence. This study aimed to gain an understanding of the knowledge and awareness of HPV, the HPV vaccine, and HPV-related cancers, and to evaluate the relationship between participant factors and HPV knowledge, vaccination uptake, and high-risk HPV (16/18) infection, among Indigenous Australians. Data from the 12…
The protective effect of Cald identity in the presence of low income on missing teeth of Australian adults over time
The negative RERI values indicate that the effect-measure modification operates in a negative direction, that is, there is a protective element to being CALD among low income groups with respect to mean number of missing teeth
Oral Health Inequities among Cald and Non-Cald Older Australians
Our findings suggest that social determinants, including increased access to dental insurance, could mitigate the oral health inequities observed
Provision of Dental Care to Indigenous South Australians and Impacts on Improved General Health
The project will have a number of important outcomes, including increased understanding of what culturally safe dental care means for Indigenous South Australians, the delivery of such care, and empirical evidence of how culturally safe dental care leads to better prognosis for chronic diseases linked with poor oral health. This will be important for health services planning, especially in the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation s…
A Longitudinal Study of Chronic Periodontitis in Two Cohorts of Community-Dwelling Elderly Australians
Background: The study aimed to estimate and compare the incidence and progression of chronic periodontitis among two generations of older Australian adults. Methods: Data were from two population-based cohort studies of Australian older adults aged 60+ years South Australian Dental Longitudinal Studies (SADLS), SADLS I (1991-1992) and SADLS II (2013-2014). American Academy of Periodontology/the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC…
Poor self-rated oral health associated with poorer general health among Indigenous Australians
Fair or poor self-rated oral health among Indigenous persons in South Australia was associated with poor general health as measured by EQ-5D-5L disutility. The relationship was especially evident with respect to mobility, self-care and anxiety/depression. The findings emphasise the importance of oral health as predictors of general health among Indigenous Australians
Population-based utility scores for HPV infection and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma among Indigenous Australians
Among a large sample of Indigenous Australians, utility for oral HPV infection and OPSCC decreased with severity of health states. Older participants, as well as males and those residing in non-metropolitan locations, had decreased utility for high-grade cytology and early invasive cancer states. Our findings are an important contribution to cost-utility and disease prevention strategies that seek to inform policies around reducing HPV infection …
Longitudinal changes in dental services provided by A ustralian dentists
The longitudinal change in PPY with aging was an inverted U-shape, which accelerated during younger age, and decelerated after reaching a peak at 50 years old. Males had higher PPY than female dentists at the same age. The pattern of PPY was different between male and female dentists
