Pharaoh and His Council: Great Minds Think Alike
In two suras of the Quran (Q 7 and Q 26) a dialogue between Pharaoh and his council members (malaʾ) is recorded after Moses performed miracles before them. The account in Q 7 is textually problematic, the version of Q 26 is smooth . Q 4: 24 Revisited
Q 4:24 has presented a challenge to classical exegetes and modern scholars alike. Examining Quranic evidence and the exegetical tradition, this article offers a textual analysis of this verse and suggests a new reading. I argue that the first part of Q 4:24 is an independent sentence; that an erroneous reading of it as a continuation of the previous verse led to the replacement of the original meaning of muhsināt (chaste women) with married women…
The foundations of the house (Q 2): 127
In Quran 2: 127 Ibrāhīm founded "the house" (most probably a reference to the Kaʿba) together with his son Ismāʿīl. This scene does not appear in the Bible and none of the attempts to find a literary precedent for it are satisfactory. This paper argues that this scene reflects post-biblical traditions concerning Genesis 22.
