Gain-Framed Text Messages and Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smoking Cessation Among Lung Cancer Screening Patients
People who undergo lung cancer screening (LCS) and continue to smoke are at risk for negative clinical outcomes and lowered survival and need effective smoking cessation interventions. This pilot study tested an 8-week intervention for smoking cessation after LCS. The participants ( N = 40) were randomized to the intervention group (combination nicotine replacement therapy [NRT] plus gain-framed text messaging for 8 weeks) or the control group (s…
Determining the impact of cannabis use and severity on tobacco cessation outcomes
The trial is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04228965. January 14th, 2020
Interest in quitting e-cigarette use by device type and smoking history in US adults
Tobacco control should consider the type of e-cigarette device that is being used, alongside users' cigarette smoking history, when developing interventions and other resources for vaping cessation
In vivo Experience With NRT to Increase Adherence and Smoking Abstinence Among Individuals in the Criminal Legal System
Background While tobacco use among individuals involved in the criminal legal system remains 3–4 times higher than the general population, few interventions have been targeted for this population to aid in smoking cessation. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) is a relatively effective and accessible smoking cessation aid; however, individuals frequently stop use of NRT early due to side effects and misperceptions about the products. The present s…
Delivery and implementation of an algorithm for smoking cessation treatment for people living with HIV and Aids
Compared to the general population, persons living with HIV (PLWH) have higher rates of tobacco use and an increased risk of morbidity from tobacco-related diseases. We conducted a single-arm pilot study of the real-world feasibility of integrating a smoking cessation decisional algorithm within routine clinic visits to engage non-treatment-seeking smokers in smoking cessation therapies. Smokers had an initial study visit during routine care foll…
Snus undermines quit attempts but not abstinence
NCT01509586, Results
Cross-country comparison of smokers' reasons for thinking about quitting over time
Differences in reasons for thinking about quitting exist among smokers in countries with different histories of tobacco control policies. Health concern is consistently the most common reason for quitting and the strongest predictor of future attempts
Trends in the use of premium and discount cigarette brands
Our data suggest that demographic and smoking trends favour the continued growth of low priced cigarette brands. From a tobacco control perspective, the findings from this study suggest that governments should consider enacting stronger minimum pricing laws in order to keep the base price of cigarettes high, since aggressive price marketing will likely continue to be used by manufacturers to compete for the shrinking pool of remaining smokers in …
Left-digit price effects on smoking cessation motivation
These data reveal the clear and robust relationship between the price of cigarettes and an individual's motivation to attempt smoking cessation. Furthermore, the current study indicates the importance of left-digit price transitions in this relationship, suggesting policymakers should consider relative price positions in the context of tax changes
Smoking in correctional facilities
Although our findings are limited by a low response rate, most employees support an indoor ban, but not a total ban on smoking. Employees generally favoured a policy that was slightly more restrictive than the current policy, but were less supportive of tighter smoking restrictions for themselves. However, a more restrictive smoking policy is likely to result in some degree of resistance among current smoking employees, who may require specific a…
