  • Cuba in the American Imagination: Metaphor and the Imperial Ethos

    Jules R Benjamin•REVIEW•Hispanic American Historical Review•2010

It is not often that one scholar contributes as many seminal works to a field as Louis Pérez has done in both Cuban history and in Cuban-U.S. relations. Just as significant are the many ways in which his corpus has influenced the research agendas of others in these fields. Cuba in the American Imagination, Pérez’s most recent study, summarizes themes in his other works and also moves in a postmodern direction to assay the role of language in the …

  • Saving Cuba from the Cubans

    Jules R Benjamin•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2000

The thesis of this book is breathtakingly simple: despite a great deal of evidence that the U.S. intervention in the war between Cuba and Spain in 1898 was an act of domination rather than liberation, the liberation theme has been the one around which the intervention has been understood by most U.S. historians. Even more significant is Louis Pérez’s finding that, in the hundred years since the war, most scholars have managed to incorporate more …

  • The United States and the Origins of the Cuban Revolution: An Empire of Liberty in an Age of Nationalism

    Damian J Fernandez, Jules R Benjamin•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•1991

Jules Benjamin argues convincingly that modern conflicts between Cuba and the United States stem from a long history of U.S. hegemony and Cuban resistance. He shows what difficulties the smaller country encountered because of U.S. efforts first to make it part of an empire of liberty and later to dominate it by economic methods, and he analyzes the kind of misreading of ardent nationalism that continues to plague U.S. policymaking

  • The Framework of U.S. Relations with Latin America in the Twentieth Century: An Interpretive Essay

    Jules R Benjamin•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•1987

All forms of U.S. expansion have derived an important part of their power from the belief that America's civilization is the highest ever produced. The ability of other peoples to attain its level was thought to depend at least upon the example it set, at most upon its active effort to elevate them. Belief in the exceptional nature of North American society has been so pervasive that even those groups opposed to particular forms of expansion have…

    Jules R Benjamin, Michael J Hogan•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•1985

TO THE EDITOR: Michael Hogan's essay (Diplomatic History, Fall 1984) describes the evolution of the idea of a corporate order in the United States from the Progressive era to the Cold War. Against this background he traces the roots of post-World War II liberal internationalism back to New Era designs for stabilizing Europe. His comparisons seem persuasive, but he gives few clues as to why the private government efforts of the 1920s fared so poor…

By early 1933 President Roosevelt's advisors concluded that the United States Government would have to play a direct role in the Cuban economy. That nation, economically dependent upon the North American sugar market and politically dependent through the Platt amendment that gave the United States the right to intervene in its internal affairs, was economically prostrate and on the verge of civil war. In most circumstances, United States power led Cuban dissidents to express themselves in very moderate terms.
