Poverty Reduction: Government Transfer Spending vs. Macroeconomic Change
The study uses a multivariate time series approach (Vector Autoregression) to compare the relative effects of government transfer spending versus macroeconomic change on poverty reduction. The analysis disaggregates transfer spending among federal budget subcategories and poverty rates among different demographic groups. The analysis also tested for the possibility that spending on government programs is adjusted in response to changes in poverty…
The Neoliberal World Order The View From The Highlands of Guatemala
From the perspective of poor rural Guatemalans, the current global crisis has little to do with interest rates or budget deficits. It has everything to do with the fact that policies aimed at the developing world are far removed from the needs and realities of themajority of the world’s peoples
Military Spending and Income Inequality
While volumes have been written on the individual topics of military economics and income distribution, only scant attention has been paid to the potential impact of military spending on the distribution of a nation's income. The traditional academic focus on the military has centered on issues such as spending impacts on employment, income and inflation, or on whether industrialized countries, in particular the United States, have become too dep…
Defense Spending and Unemployment Rates: An Empirical Analysis Disaggregated by Race and Gender
Empirical evidence is provided, using vectorautoregressive techniques, that the employment impacts of defense spending are not equally distributed among racial and gender lines and across time. While increases in defense spending were generally found to be associated with increases in each of the unemployment rates, in the 1980s, it was observed that black males were most severely impacted by such spending, while white males were least severely i…
Distributional Effects of Monetary and Fiscal Policy: Impacts on Unemployment Rates Disaggregated By Race and Gender
The use of vectorautoregression techniques provides empirical verification that monetary and fiscal policies do not have equal impacts on unemployment rates disaggregated by race and gender. In general, it was found that white males benefited from macro-policies more than any other category. However, black females were also shown to benefit significantly. Results were reported from both the 1970s and 1980s and indicate that these differential une…
The Impact of Demand Management Policies on Black Vs. White Employment
This article uses vector autoregression analysis to examine the relative impacts on black and white employment growth of monetary and fiscal actions. It was found that the employment responses to anticipated policy actions, while significant, were generally short-lived, with the exception of the effects of anticipated money growth on white employment. The influences of unanticipated policy changes are of a longer duration. The predominant finding…
