Of Wine, Sex, and Other Abominations
Accusations of sexual perversion, of defying both the statutes of man and the laws of the almighty, have since Antiquity been a staple of heresiographic discourse. They had pride of place in Muslim heresiology as well, which charged many a heretical sect with engaging in group sex, incest, wine-drinking, as well as the shunning of the obligatory rituals such as prayer and pilgrimage. One group has fared particularly badly at the hands of Muslim h…
The Heretic Talks Back
In this essay I study a piece of early Islamic polemical literature concerned with accusations of libertinism—illicit sex, wine drinking, and other offenses—along with some unorthodox teachings. Through the study of this text, I explore the role of social context and configurations of power in the way premodern Islamic theological discourses have been formulated. In particular, I look at how, in a situation of power imbalance, members of a malign…

Kitāb al-ashbāḥ wa l-aẓilla and its Milieu
Bankers and Politics
The article studies the network of moneychangers in the Shi‘i community of Kufa during the eighth-ninth centuries. It argues that apart from exchanging currencies, some of these moneychangers acted as financial agents for the imams, collecting funds from their following, receiving donations on their behalf, and with the collected money regulating the internal affairs of the Kufan Shi‘i community. By looking at the history of the Shi‘i community a…
