The effect of government informatization construction on corporate digital technology innovation: New evidence from China
This study explores the impact of government informatization construction on corporate digital technology innovation. It uses the integration of informatization and industrialization pilot zones in China as a quasi‐natural experiment of government informatization construction, and construct a difference‐in‐differences model. Based on a sample of Chinese A‐share corporations from 2007 to 2021, the empirical findings reveal that government informat…
Can place-based policy reduce carbon emissions? Evidence from industrial transformation and upgrading exemplary zone in China
The effect of the place-based policies on sustainable development has received substantial attention in economic research. In China, the industrial transformation and upgrading exemplary zone policy is a prominent example of such policies, as it targets old industrial and resource-based cities. The paper provides an early assessment of the policy’s capability to reduce carbon emissions. Specifically, we use data from old industrial and resource-b…
The effect of information infrastructure on total carbon emissions and intensity: Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment in China
This study takes the “Broadband China” demonstration cities policy as a shock to information infrastructure development, and systematically evaluates the effects of the policy on the total carbon emissions and intensity in 280 Chinese cities using the multi-period difference-in-differences method. The research results show that the policy significantly reduced total CO2 emissions and intensity, especially in cities with a higher economic developm…
How does digital economy affect synergy of carbon mitigation and pollution reduction? Evidence from next-generation internet demonstration city construction in China
The impact of green finance on economic growth: Evidence from the green finance reform and innovation pilot zone
This study examines the impact and its mechanisms of green finance on economic growth by using the green finance reform and innovation pilot zone (GFRIPZ) as a quasi-natural experiment. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2019, we employ a difference-in-differences (DID) model and find that the GFRIPZ's construction has a positive effect on economic growth, resulting in real GDP growth of 2.2% in the pilot zones. Mechani…
The impact of national comprehensive medical reform on residents' medical expenses: Evidence from China
Residents' high medical expenses is the core challenge that needs to be solved urgently in China's medical reform for a long time. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in Chinese Mainland during 2011–2019, we evaluate the impact of China's national comprehensive medical reform pilot policy on residents' medical expenses by using the difference-in-differences model. The results show that the pilot policy was generally conducive to reducing resi…
Place-based policy and green innovation: Evidence from the national pilot zone for ecological conservation in China
The Impact of Economic Growth Target Constraints on Environmental Pollution: Evidence from China
Economic growth target (EGT) has become an essential tool for macroeconomic administration all around the world. This study examines the effect and mechanisms of EGT on environmental pollution (EP) by using economic growth target data from provincial Government Work Reports in China from 2003-2019. The conclusions denote that EGT significantly aggravates regional EP, and it still stands after robustness tests and instrumental variable (IV) estima…
Synergy of pollution control and carbon reduction in China: Spatial–temporal characteristics, regional differences, and convergence
Re-examining the effect of China’s new-energy demonstration cities construction policy on environmental pollution: A perspective of pollutant emission intensity control
The construction of new-energy demonstration cities (NEDC) is a typical energy policy recently implemented in China, which aims to accelerate energy transition. Using panel data for 269 Chinese cities during 2010-2017, this study examines the effect of the NEDC construction policy on environmental pollution under the difference-in-differences (DID) framework from the perspective of pollutant emission intensity control. The results show that China…
