General overview of Ethiosemitic
Several theories were suggested as to the origin of Ethiosemitic, ranging from the immigration by one or several waves of speakers of Semitic from South Arabia to the Western coast of the Red Sea and up to the designation of East Africa as the original habitat of Semites in general. Ethiosemitic, at all its stages, conforms to the basic structure of Semitic with discontinuous consonantal roots providing the basic meaning and fixed patterns of vow…
Neo-Aramaic and its Linguistic Context
This volume contains papers on the Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects and the languages in contact with them. The papers make important contributions to the documentation of the dialects and to the understanding of their development in the context of non-Semitic contact languages.

Notes on relative and correlative constructions in Gǝʿǝz
ዘሞትነ ንሕነ ወዘነገሥነ ንሕነ: The relative verb accompanied by its headnoun, forming a relative clause which functions as the equivalent of an adjective, is the normal construction in the Semitic languages. In Gǝʿǝz, however, it is the substantivized relative clause, in which the headnoun is missing, that is the most diversified in its function and probably statistically more frequent. Verbless Relative Clauses in Gǝʿǝz and their Equivalents in Amharic and Tigrinya
The most frequent and most typical relative clauses in Gǝʿǝz have a verbal predicate, but also nominal, or in other terms verbless, sentences may be relativized. Since Gǝʿǝz has no copula, nominal sentences are composed of the subject and of the predicative complement of a zero copula only. Considering that in sentences with relative clauses the headnoun stands outside the relative clause, all that is left in the latter is the relative pronoun an…
