Effect on Performance of Timely Feedback on State Writing Assessments
The effect of timely feedback for a state writing assessment on subsequent writing performance was investigated. Also, agreement between teachers' scores on assessment and the state department's scores was compared. Eighth grade English teachers (N=8) were trained on an analytic scoring method which yielded scores on ideas, organization, voice, and conventions. September state writing assessments from the teachers' class were scored by the teache…
An Investigation of the Validity of Scores on Locally Developed Performance Measures in a School Assessment Program
A multitrait-multimethod approach was used to investigate the validity of scores on locally prepared performance assessments. The multiple traits were reading, language arts, and mathematics, and the multiple methods were the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills/4, locally developed multiple-choice tests, and locally prepared performance assessments. The results offer very limited evidence of convergence and discrimination for scores on the perform…
Use of an Inclusive Option and the Optimal Number of Options for Multiple-Choice Items
This study examined the validity of two item-writing rules in the design of test items: (a) the desirable number of options for a multiple-choice test item and (b) use of the inclusive none of these option. An experimental repeated measures design found that items with three options were more difficult than those with four options and items employing the none of these option were more difficult than those not using this inclusive option format. N…
Longitudinal Studies of Risk Taking on Objective Examinations
Risk taking on objective examinations (rtooe) is defined as guessing when the examinee is aware of a penalty for incorrect responses (Slakter, 1967). Since rtooe measures can be obtained from Ss ostensibly taking aptitude or achievement tests, they provide psychologists with useful disguised measures of risk taking. Prior studies have indicated that rtooe is related to dominance-submission (Votaw, 1936), maladjustment (Sherriffs and Boomer, 1954)…
