A Behavioristic Analysis of the Book of Job
A behavioristic analysis based on current principles and empirical findings of learning psychology is applied to the Old Testament Book of Job. Specifically, the psychological origins of Job's helplessness are analyzed from such a behavioristic perspective. This analysis compares the behavior of Job with the phenomenon of “learned helplessness,” indicating that there is almost perfect correspondence between Job's situation and established experim…
Behavior Therapy and Job's Recovery
Job's recovery from a state of psychological helplessness is identified with the presence of therapy procedures which correspond closely with contemporary behavior therapy techniques. Accusations found in the conversations of Job's friends become increasingly intense and are equated with systematic desensitization. Elihu is viewed as providing a significant therapeutic contribution by distracting Job's attention from his own afflictions to the gr…
An Apology to Darwin
We provide critical comments on a recent paper by Barash (1972) in which he describes the seating preferences and frequencies of looking up by students in a cafeteria. While we do not quarrel with his data, we reject the evolutionary assumptions and ethological identifications which are explicitly introduced throughout Barash's paper
The behavioral significance of pheromones in vertebrates
Preliminary Note on Seasonal Production of Planarian Pheromone
A seasonal, reproductive pheromone is reported which significantly influences planarian aggregation behavior
Strain Differences in Continued Avoidance after a Short or Long Retention Interval
3 experiments examined the effects of CS-only trials and retention interval upon resistance to extinction of an avoidance response. In Exps. I and II, nonemotional Holtzman rats showed high resistance to extinction regardless of experimental conditions. In Exp. III, emotional Sasco rats showed high resistance to extinction for a short delay while forgetting was almost complete for the longer retention interval. The results were discussed in terms…
