Model for Korsakoff-Type Amnesias
Intracranial electrodes were implanted bilaterally in the anterior area of the amygdala ( n = 7), or unilaterally in the mamillary body ( n = 6) of Hot: (SD) male rats. The rats were then trained to run back and forth to obtain food pellets at either end of a runway. At the midpoint were two adjacent doorways. Passing through the correct doorway set up food-pellet delivery. Passing through the incorrect doorway merely registered as an error. Dail…
Psychotropic Drug Effects on Self-Stimulation of the Brain
Rats with electrodes in the posterior lateral hypothalamus were trained in a chamber having two platforms. When standing on one platform, S received rewarding brain stimulation continuously. Switching to the other platform turned stimulation off. The proportion of time spent on the positive platform indicated the reward value of stimulation. Preliminary tests determined that the time measure was positively related to stimulation intensity. Drug t…
Self-Determined Aversive Thresholds from the Medial Hypothalamus of the Rat
Rats were implanted with permanent electrodes in the medial hypothalamus, an area where the duration of electrical stimulation seems the main determinant of the centrally-elicited reinforcing effect, with brief stimulation yielding reward and prolonged stimulation yielding punishment. The reinforcing effect in this study was made as purely punishing as possible by applying stimulation to the hypothalamus continuously. When stimulus intensity was …
