Prediction of Susceptibility to Substance Dependency
Independent multiple regression equations for predicting susceptibility to either alcohol or opiates were double cross-validated. Criterion correlations were also significant when applied in field use with independent samples having established histories. Either equation, however, predicted either substance equally well, and the scores loaded on the same factor. A combined generalized equation proved valid for both substances
Performance Assessment and Personalities of Teachers and Students
219 students in Grade 10 and 27 of their teachers at a suburban high school were divided at their respective medians into four groups on emotional stability and extraversion. Teachers' ratings of several general aspects of students' performance correlated highly with final grades; ratings reflected both students' and teachers' personalities
Interaction of Teachers' Judgments of Students' Personality and School Performance
Multiple judgments of school performance and students' personality by teachers interact and neither involve intelligence scores. Teachers' degree of “feelings of personal warmness” were a major factor in assessments
State Anxiety
A highly anxious man experienced erratic oscillations in moods that were associated with numerous physiological interactions. State-anxiety was at one extreme, calm-lethargic state at the other, but at the mid-point he was in precarious autonomic balance and very responsive to even mild stimuli
Word Association
A one-day retest of Kent-Rosanoff items embedded in lists used for another purpose showed over 5 days for the blocks of repeated 20 items each day a turn from personal to public dictionary, but not for the new block of 25 on that day
Word Association
Free word associations with pressure to respond fast were compared for actively psychotic, but tranquil, chronic schizophrenics of two categories and closely matched hospital employees. The stimulus words were homonyms that were equated among other factors for availability of responses in the various response tendencies characterized as idiodynamic sets, e.g., to define or explain the stimulus, or to give a syntactic response. Comprehensive scori…
Word Association
11 independent sources of variance in free-word association attributable to differences in stimulus words were delineated. Almost all of these characteristics were noted long ago in separate univariate experiments, but the fact that these were independent effects has not been noted
Word Association
Three varimax factors in which verbal intelligence loaded were identified for several diverse groups including schizophrenics. Only paradigmatic associates loaded on these factors: general paradigmatic vs faults typical of failures to follow the instructions to give a word, denotative vs idiosyncratic, and connotative-adjectival. Although they were correlated negatively with intelligence, syntagmatic associates formed no cohesive pattern of commo…
Word Association
Scoring schema of word associations for grammatical form, affective and semantic-syntactic associates were developed using factor analyses of logically developed schema. The schema evolved over the past 20 yr. with hundreds of ambiguous words and a thousand subjects of several normal and patient categories. The procedures, rationales, and results of the three schema are presented with the factor structures obtained with 100 normal adult males wit…
Word Association and Formal Training of the Written Language
This study combined a cross-sectional and a longitudinal approach with children from kindergarten through Grade 5 responding in free word association on four occasions to stimulus words introduced at each of the first six grade levels. These responses were analyzed for meaningfulness, syntagmatic-paradigmatic relationship, and for idiodynamic response set. As previously reported with grade level the meaningfulness of responses increased, and the …
Word Association and Formal Training of the Written Language
Commonalities of adult word associations with 659 stimulus words were examined as a function of the elementary school grade level at which the words are formally introduced in their written form. There was a systematic decrease in the commonality of associates as a function of the grade level at which a stimulus word is introduced. A random sample of 20 words from each grade level showed that 64% of the primary responses to these words had been i…
Technique for Minimizing the Instrumental Factor
A technique is described for using orthogonal factor scores to compare the item-scores obtained from two or more media so as to minimize the instrumental factor problem. It is compared with the hypothesis matrix technique using the item-scores of a behavior rating scale and a structured psychiatric interview scale. The direct factor score method proved to be more effective in several aspects, mainly because it yielded larger loadings and, therefo…
Comparison of Responses to Anticipated Stress and Stress
Baseline measurements of autonomic, metabolic, and psychological processes of young men were compared with their responses to anticipated hypoxia and hypoxia. Relative to their baseline levels, the subjects reacted differently to the anticipated stress--some reacted hardly at all, while others had an alarm reaction. Upon actual exposure to hypoxia (except for those compensatory adaptations specific to hypoxia) these general responses simply incre…
Repetitive Psychometric Measurements
Standardization data of a new 1-min. trisecting test of the RPM Battery are presented. The test is composed of three staggered rows of 10 vertical lines each of variable length. The task is to estimate visually and mark the top third, then to bisect the remainder of as many lines as possible in 1 min. Scores of the first of the two steps, trisection, were shown to be independent of those for the second step, bisection. At least three perceptual i…
Repetitive Psychometric Measures
Two digit span tests are compared. The first was the traditional test consisting of seven numbers with digits ranging from 4 through 10, and the second, a new test with two forms in which four 8-digit and four 10-digit numbers alternate. High correlations are noted between the test scores in all instances even with the varied test procedures and scoring techniques. The strong influence of the size of number and the lesser influence of practice on…
Repetitive Psychometric Measures
A Spatial Orientation measure with 20 parallel forms was evaluated under various conditions with three samples, totalling 265 Ss. The forms were based on the Thurstone Card Test, but the format and time limits were modified. The new measure correlated at low positive levels with Speed of Closure (.35), Visualization (.28), Number Facility (.27), and Wechsler-Bellevue Vocabulary scores (.43), but factor analyses established that it and the Thursto…
Effects of Idiodynamic Set and Stimulus Characteristics on Numeral Homonym Associates
Three groups of 60 and one group of 100 Ss associated to word lists which varied in the order of occurrence of 4 numeral homonyms (e.g., eight-ate), in the position of an unambiguous numeral ( viz., three) in the stimulus list, and in the number of intervening non-numeral stimulus words. Numeral responses were facilitated in a non-specific manner by the unambiguous numeral and by a decreased interval between the numeral stimulus words. Individual…
Repetitive Psychometric Measures
The 20 alternate forms of five psychometric measures (Number Facility, Visualization, Speed of Perception, Speed of Closure, and Flexibility of Closure) were administered to two samples of 544 and 508 college students. All alternate forms but that for Number Facility were found to be reliably different in difficulty level. Statistical weights derived from either sample were found to decrease variability of alternate form means in the other sample…
Verbal-Quantitative Ability and Certain Personality and Metabolic Characteristics of Male College Students
Repetitive Psychometric Measures
interviews, and psychomotor or psychophysical measures to assess many of the attributes which are best measured by traditional psychometric techniques. Recently, consuuction was begun on a battery of brief Repetitive Psychometric Measures (RPM) designed specifically for making multiple repetitive measurements on the same individual for extended periods of time (Moran & Mefferd, 1959). The first six tests of the battery provided 20 alternate forms…
