  • Longitudinal Evaluation Using the Environmental Deprivation Scale—Questionnaire with Felons

Open Access•Arnold D Witherspoon, ARNOLD DEL WITHERSPOON et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

The status of 32 felons was examined two years after they had completed the Environmental Deprivation Scale. Those who violated parole or probation scored significantly differently from those who remained on parole or probation or had been released. The questionnaire score could be helpful to identify which felons require additional supervision or treatment. Larger samples and extended evaluation are necessary for firm conclusions

  • The Environmental Deprivation Scale as a Predictor of Academic Performance

    Open Access•Carolyn K Long, Arnold D Witherspoon•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

Scores of 72 college students on the Environmental Deprivation Scale were correlated with grade point averages and accumulated credit hours. Significant negative values indicated that high scale scores may be predictive of poor academic performance (low GPAs). Further analysis identified specific areas for intervention with students at risk for dropping out

  • Comparison of Written and Oral Responses for Scoring the Environmental Deprivation Scale

    Open Access•Arnold D Witherspoon, Dana Hitson et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

A 65-item questionnaire was developed and administered to 56 undergraduate students for the purpose of comparing written responses to the usual oral responses necessary for scoring the Environmental Deprivation Scale. Scores based on responses to the questionnaire correlated with those obtained from the standard interview procedure ( r = .78, p <.001). Percent agreement for two raters scoring the questionnaire was high ( r = .85, p <.001). Advant…

  • Correlation for Eysenck's Measure of Psychoticism and the Environmental Deprivation Scale

    Open Access•Arnold D Witherspoon, Carolyn K Long et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relatedness of the Psychoticism scale of Eysenck's Personality Questionnaire-Revised and the Environmental Deprivation Scale using college students as subjects. Each measure provides different information through varied techniques. Scores on both have been associated with antisocial behavior. The r of .61 is discussed in terms of the assessment of antisocial behavior

  • A Partial Replication of Lippin (1990) Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator with a Sample of Female Prisoners

    Open Access•Carolyn K Long, Cathy Lenoir et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1995

A sample of 108 women incarcerated in a state prison who volunteered to participate in an employment seminar were given the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. Comparison of the distribution of types here and in Myers and McCaulley's 1985 sample using a Selection Ratio Type Table for analysis indicated an overrepresentation of ISTJ, ISFJ, and ISTP. The ESFP and ESFJ types were underrepresented. Further analysis of the types and the relationship to crimi…

  • Dropping Out

    Open Access•Arnold D Witherspoon, Carolyn K Long et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1991

This study focused on the relationship that anxiety about speaking has to educational achievement, self-esteem, and type of crime. The data gathered from 46 female felons indicated significant relationships and suggested that programs designed to decrease anxiety about speaking can be effectively presented. Perhaps such treatment should be the first step in developing and correcting deficiencies in skills thereby preventing the skid toward droppi…

  • Decreasing Speech Anxiety of Female Prisoners

    Open Access•Eugenie B Nickell, Arnold D Witherspoon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1989

This study compared self-reported speech anxiety experienced by female prisoners before and after attending a special program within a state vocational facility. With high scores on the Personal Report of Confidence as a Speaker, 13 women volunteers were treated in a program incorporating various techniques including systematic desensitization, cognitive restructuring, skills training, and shaping. These components were presented in six 2-hr. ses…
