  • Effects of CS Presence and Duration on Suppression of Positively Reinforced Responding in the Rat

    Open Access•Eliot Shimoff, E H Shimoff et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1969

The variable of CS duration preceding unavoidable electric shock was investigated with rats as Ss. For the 6 durations examined from 3.75 to 60 sec, suppression of positively reinforced bar-pressing in the presence of CS was complete. While response suppression between CS presentations was initially severe, it gradually dissipated as the experiment progressed. A separate group of rats received unavoidable shocks not preceded by a stimulus. Genera…

  • Adrenal Hypertrophy in the Rat as a Function of Probability and Frequency of Punishment

    Open Access•Douglas P Ferraro, William N Schoenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1967

After training on a regular reinforcement procedure in which a lever-pressing response produced milk reward, each of 16 groups of water-deprived rats was exposed to a different concurrent contingency of regular reinforcement and random interval punishment for 20 experimental sessions. Under the intermittent punishment schedules used, the programmed probability and frequency of response-contingent electric shock were independently manipulated. Aut…

  • Cardiac Rate of the Rat under a DRL and a Non-Contingent Temporal Schedule of Reinforcement

    Open Access•Arthur G Snapper, W N Schoenfeld et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

Two experiments were conducted in an attempt to produce conditioning of the rat's heart-rate response to periodic presentations of a positive reinforcer. In the first study, milk was presented once every 60 sec. to 2 Ss and once every 240 sec. to 2 other Ss. The unconditioned cardiac response to the milk was an increase in cardiac rate, and, while it was shown that the increase became conditioned to auditory stimulation which accompanied the milk…
