Prediction of Organization in Free Recall from Reported Learning Strategy
The effect of learning strategies on amount of clustering in recall of randomized categorized word lists was investigated. Significant correlations between the degree of Ss' repotted use of the categories in learning and clustering in recall were obtained for each of 3 lists. Instructions designed to interfere with the use of the categories as a learning strategy were ineffective in lessening clustering, in part because few Ss followed the instru…
Recall of Reinforcement and Conative Activity in Verbal Conditioning
Ss in a verbal conditioning experiment were afterwards required to indicate their motivation to receive reinforcement and to make quantitative estimates of their trying for reinforcement and of E's giving reinforcement. These interview responses were fairly closely postdictive of mean actual performance gains. The pattern of results is consistent with a cognitive interpretation of verbal conditioning
Implicit Epistemological Bias and the Problem of Awareness in Verbal Conditioning
We are grateful for che opportunity to detail more fully our verbal-conditioning findings (Spielberger & DeNike, 1962) in response to Greenspoon's ( 1963) discussion of our paper. In order to respond to the points Greenspoon has raised, especially those pertaining to extinction, awareness, and the reinforcing properties of Mmm-hmm, it will be necessary to refer to data other than chat presented in the paper reviewed by him. We shall also endeavor…
