Exploratory Factor Analysis of the Human Behavior Rating Scale
The construct validity of Eaves' Human Behavior Rating Scale (HBRS) was investigated. The HBRS is a scale with 91 Likert-type items designed to measure five factors: arousal (persistence and curiosity), affect (externalizing and internalizing), and cognition. Forty-four teachers of Grades 6, 7, and 8 from two low socioeconomic and rural southern counties completed the HBRS for 320 of their students. Three parcels were submitted for analysis for e…
Internal Consistency of the Human Behavior Rating Scale
The internal consistency of the Human Behavior Rating Scale (HBRS) was investigated. The 91-item Likert-type scale is designed to measure five dimensions: persistence, curiosity, externalizing affect, internalizing affect, and cognition. It is used as a research tool to investigate the tenets of Eaves' 1993 integrated theory of human behavior. Three separate sampling plans were employed. Teachers and nonteachers completed Human Behavior Rating Sc…
Content Validity of the Visual Similes Test II
This study examined the content validity of the Visual Similes Test II, designed to measure affective and cognitive arousal in individuals 5 to 21 years of age. The 54 participants were asked to rate the affective and cognitive content of unoccluded stimuli from the Visual Similes Test II. The participants, whose mean age was 27.0 yr. (SD=8.6), included 1 (2%) man and 53 (98%) women who were enrolled in undergraduate and graduate special educatio…

Additional Factorial Evidence of Construct Validity for the Visual Similes Test II with Scores from a Sample of African-American Children
The Visual Similes Test II was designed to measure the construct of arousal. This study investigated its factor structure with scores from a sample of 154 African-American elementary school children (7 to 10 years). The initial factor structure was examined using principal axis factor analysis with the promax rotation. Confirmatory factor analysis was then used to evaluate the model-fit of the data with the hypothesized hierarchical model. Result…
Pervasive Developmental Disorders Rating Scale
The Pervasive Developmental Disorders Rating Scale was designed for use in screening of pervasive developmental disorders. This paper describes the rationale and development of the scale and assesses its construct validity with ratings from a sample of 362 children ranging in age from 1 to 12 years and diagnosed with autistic disorder. The hypothesized heirarchical factor model and two competing models were examined through confirmatory factor an…
Confirmatory Factor Analysis of an Instrument Designed to Measure Affective and Cognitive Arousal
The Visual Similes Test II is a research instrument designed to measure the construct of arousal. The test consists of two forms: an affective form and a cognitive form. Previous research has indicated that a strong negative relationship exists between affective arousal and behavior problems; likewise, cognitive arousal has a strong positive relationship with measured intelligence. This investigation examined the rationale behind the development …
Factor Analysis of the Minnesota Infant Development Inventory Based on a Hispanic Migrant Population
The Minnesota Infant Development Inventory (MIDI), a parental report instrument, was completed for 168 Hispanic migrant workers’infants ranging in age from 1 to 15 months. This study analyzed MIDI scores to determine the extent to which it measures the five domains postulated by its authors. Principal axis analysis with varimax and orthotran rotations was used to obtain pattern coefficients. The scree test and a parallel analysis were used to est…
Cognition and Academic Achievement
This study evaluated the ability of the Cognitive Levels Test to estimate current achievement in mathematics (as measured by the KeyMath Diagnostic Arithmetic Test) and reading (via the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests) among a group of 43 handicapped and at-risk children. The validity coefficients resulting from the analysis indicated that the Cognitive Levels Test provides valid estimates of mathematics and reading achievement. A repeated measure…
The Concurrent Validity of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests Relative to the Peabody Individual Achievement Test among Retarded Adolescents
To investigate the concurrent validity of the Woodcock Reading Mastery Tests (WRMT) and the Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT), both instruments were administered to 56 adolescents. Scores on the PIAT reading and spelling subtests were correlated with scores on the WRMT subtests which were designed to measure similar skills. Partial correlation coefficients were calculated for male, female, black, and white children as well as for the tot…
